I went through a phase of making S-type electric guitars. Sprayed with cellulose too.

I bought an ankle bone (or similar) from a butcher on advice. This was because it was a large bone and I was told one would be more likely to obtain solid bone without too many er...air hole(s) (equivalents).
I boiled it for many hours. The appalling smell lasted many more hours.
Once it was dry I managed to get two nuts from it. The rest was too hole-y or difficult to cut. It was surprising how few nuts could be extracted from a cow ankle.

That experiment lasted one experiment and I took up buying them from guitar shops.

[Note: I see the word 'saddle' and not 'nut'. Sorry. I would guess you would obtain even fewer larger flatter objects such as saddles. Maybe different bones such as tibia and fibia would be more appropriate but I'm sure, from my knowledge of cow anatomy, they would also not be shaped appropriately and hole-free bone the extent of a saddle would be unlikely.]

I ordered some unbleached cattle bone blanks (from http://www.smallwonder-music.co.uk) and made my first saddle yesterday. It's perfect and I am feeling rather pleased with myself.

Thicknessing it without a belt sander was arduous, but I followed the Pablo Requena video to fashion the saddle, and took RobF's advice by wearing a mask to prevent inhaling the stinky carcinogenic dust.

Thanks for your help and advice.

You’ll be opening a full service repair shop in no time.

But that would mean clients. I would not enjoy it :)

It’s a weird material because it dulls knife edged tools

No kidding. Recently, I used my nice Japanese fine tooth saw to cut some and I was shocked at how fast it dulled the teeth. :/ I wasn’t sure if it was just coincidence, but hearing this, now I know

If you have to cut down CF spar for neck stiffening use a cheap hack saw blade for metal, medium fine tooth
