Norman Paul Kliman -> Pontins issues apology to "Gypsies and Travellers" (Sep. 2 2024 18:35:45)

A UK holiday-park operator has issued an apology for discriminating against “Gypsies and Travellers.” Read about it here in The Guardian:
https://www.theguardian.com/world/article/2024/sep/02/pontins-says-sorry-to-gypsy-and-traveller-communities-over-discrimination

Brad Pitt’s character in Snatch was supposed to be an Irish Traveller. More about them here in English:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_Travellers

According to Wikipedia, they’re at least “socially” similar to the mercheros, a marginalized social group living mostly in central Spain. More about them here in Spanish:
https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merchero

Presumably, the only reason the park operator got caught is that some of its employees were careless about it. As late as 1976, authorities in Sweden were still subjecting Roma women to forced sterilization.

All these social groups proudly embrace flamenco but, as far as artistic creation and interpretation go, they don’t get much further than rumbas and maybe fandangos.

Being an important artist is not a gold pass for breaking the law. Groups that remain exclusive by their own laws will always remain marginalized. Of course that sucks for the majority who don’t break laws. Amongst my own gypsy friends (Romanian mostly), they are very cautious even amongst their own clans. The “patriarch” of one local group, keeps pepper spray in his pocket at all engagement parties and weddings, ready to spray everyone and get his family out of there when shyte hits the fan (which it inevitably does).

I have noticed, however, amongst the younger generation with phones and social media activity, very different behaviors. A lot less public drinking and smoking of the 9 year olds, etc., respectful attitudes, basically integration is happening via these cel phones.

Astute observation about the influence of the internet...

I was also surprised to read the that the Irish Travellers have any connection to flamenco, whatsoever. Mind you, I don't really know much about them, save they are indigenous to Ireland. The great Irish piper, Paddy Keenan, who now lives in Massachusetts, I believe, is a Traveller. I believe his family were what are called "settled" travellers, all were accomplished Irish traditional musicians.

I know a lot about Irish Travelers, because I met many fishing in the West of Ireland. The majority came from Sligo but had many connecions in Scotland.

Several became best friends, especially Big Davi el jefe. We were the best fishermen and in the bar after I never manage to invite him to a cerveza.

One night there were many trout feeding, but nobody caught anything. I caught a small trout, opened the stomach and found that the trout were eating nymphs (emergers), not adultos. I tied some flies to copy them. Because I had to go home next day, I gave them to Davi. The next time I saw him he told me he had the day of his life with my flies.

The Travelers have nothing in common con the gitanos de Andalucía but they are just as good people.
