No. There are many fans of the “old school” that don’t tolerate a single note of Paco de Lucía, thinking his toque is some form of jazz fusion. But I for one say, everybody SHOULD respect him as a great tocaor.

While a fan of the "old school" (my favorite being Sabicas), I have always respected Paco de Lucia as a great tocaor. What I objected to, and so stated on this Foro on several occasions, was when PDL created his ensemble that included a bass guitar and a harmonica. I saw him perform twice with this combination. I thought it detracted from his flamenco-centric guitar work. But that's just me.

Huge fan. His music was an introduction into a whole new world of Flamenco which I knew nothing about. He was such a master of the rhythms and technique of the past, and so creative and forward thinking. He seemed to be a force of nature who never sold out. Thank God I got to see him twice live. Ha, I had my Paco t-shirt on this morning when the dog dragged me two and a half miles for my constitutional.

I like him a lot but also dislike him not for his music though but rather his virtuosity. I mean he's so far off gone from everybody it's demotivating and depressing to listen to his stuff at times

Recording in a studio is different to a live performance yes. [8|]

But who suggested it wasn't? And how does that change anything Ricardo said?

Are you trying to suggest paco may not have been able to accompany someone on the fly in a bar or street or on a day off? [&:]

No. But the question is who is Paco as compared to those who dedicated their whole life to accompanying cante? Paco is a flamenco solo guitar virtuoso which has nothing to do with flamenco cante. That's what Morante is getting at.

Sorry, but Morante is not getting at that at all: Paco has demonstrated, not only with Camaron, that he knows. He had a particular style, just like Melchor or Ricardo o Moraito. None of us can hope to achieve that level.

Paco spent the equivalent of a lifetime accompanying cante. By the time he was 20, he probably forgot more about it than most all of us will ever know.

He said once he had spent half his life in fiestas. He won an award, which was created for him as he was technically too young to compete, for his accompaniment when he was a child.

And yes, I'm still a fan.

Not always. Often even in the studio the cantaor is not giving the guitarist the heads up about which cante comes next. The first video I shared with Mairena is a live on stage performance in Utrera. I am certain you are not well versed enough in cante to realize Mairena is deliberately not making it easy on Paco, and there was no rehearsal there, Paco was being put in his place so to speak, as this came AFTER the success of Entre dos Aguas, etc. Those styles and delivery are very tricky IMO, and Paco made a good impression on Mairena who was at first skeptical Paco could do even remotely as good a job as Melchor.
