Hello all,

Wanted to run this question by all of you in the hopes to find out some information I have not been able to find using Google. What was Faustino Conde's exact date and cause of death? Just really interested in knowing when the last guitars at the Gravina shop were made by him.

He and his brother died the same year I believe, 1989? Truth will be that he long stopped building guitars by hand before then, however, it is questionable whether he built guitars at all since the time he built for the widow of his uncle to fill orders. By that I mean, the “house of conde” might be better considered an artisan house like Ramirez, where you have apprentices doing the work and the main builder just checks em out for approval. There is of course the conjecture that they don’t even have proper apprentices but rather simply outsource…and this could have been going on way back, including all the famous Condes of the maestros like PDL, etc. So your concern about whether the old man actually laid a finger on a particular guitar should be put aside in hopes you can physically try any instrument before buying it. At the least it could be “sold” regardless if you could try it or not, based on its name alone…but basing a price on the chance of assumed “authenticity” is a bad way to go. My best Conde was not built by Faustino, even though i also have one he might have built in 73.
