Norman Paul Kliman -> RE: Holiday falseta: bulería romanceada (Dec. 23 2023 19:53:55)

Thanks, Richard. My playing’s kinda rough (you’d do it better) and I had to spend a few days recording it. I settled on this take out of five or six because the end is the clearest and most concise. I chopped off the sloppy start and used the rest in the video, but some of the other takes have a better feel, when the falseta is repeated a few times, along with a few short ideas. Over and over, like most of those romances. I haven’t heard that kind of singing at a party or anything, but I’ll bet it’s pretty exciting. You should give that falseta a shot, with the repetitions. It would probably sound a lot better than that video. Giliana, eh? I’d have to hit the books to be sure, but I think that became a style when some flamencólogo (or singer, maybe Pepe el de la Matrona) said fast soleás used to be called gelianas, and el Lebrijano made that recording, but it’s one of those lost styles, isn’t it? I don’t think there are many or any examples in pre-vinyl recordings. I remember giving it some attention a long time ago, and it just sounded like a romance to me. Many versions of that letra online. One page in particular has seven or eight examples, mostly from northern Spain and handed down (oral transmission).
