I always play with my speakers behind me at gigs to monitor, one of the reasons I can't really mic up.

I was wondering what it might be like to use those in-ear phones that vocalists use? Seems to me like it could be a nice way of reducing feedback allowing more scope to mic up, as well as offering more choice for speaker positioning.

Anyone tried them?

Part of the reason for having the monitor face you and not have it be the same as the house sound, is so the mic picks up a different sound and you can hear you self too. Of course it is a different sound than the house, but you won't get the bass feed back for instance. I like the monitor to be not too loud but the house very loud if possible. If you use the ear monitor, you will better hear yourself but not necessarily eliminate possible feedbacks. If you are behind the house speakers for example, you could get bass feedback. Cutting bass from you sound affects what the people hear. Ideally you have the house up front like that, but a good floor monitor to hear. Other wise, speakers behind is the way to go.

My friends use the bose towers and they don't need monitors even if the speaker is up front.

Jon,
playing with the speakers behind you is just crazy! Don't you value your ears, man? One of my partners does the same thing, so every gig we sit in front of two Bose Panarays with 500 watts pumping through them. He loves it; I use earplugs.

I think a monitor is a great investment. When I play with another friend, we use a big powered Mackie speaker. I would probably try one of those Galaxy Hotspots.

Don't know much about the in-ears, but have heard through the grapevine that they are awesome.

Its pretty standard for soloists Mike, particularly people like us that don't play 'loud' rock or whatever. Saves having to lug round a monitor on top of everything else.

I don't postion the speakers directly behind my head, obviously, they might be on the floor for small gigs, or up on poles higher than my head at others. No risk to hearing at all, I can usually just about hear myself well enough.
