rafapak -> golpeador in one piece-spanish word for it (Jul. 30 2023 11:46:28)

hi guys

I don't know for sure but probably there are different kinds of golpeadores available in the market. Those made of two pieces and those made of one piece of plastic. Do you know spanish word for golpeador made of one piece of plastic like the one in the video ? when I make order I want to avoid making mistake. I need golpeador exactly like the one in the video .

Normally what you need is the dimensions. In USA, I think we get an 8x8 inch square, and the thickness is half a millimeter or something. Then you cut it to fit. So go by dimensions you need or want. Otherwise, don’t buy it. You should be able to find the material at the hardware store. Self-adhesive plastic sheets.

thanks Ricardo for reply

People recommend electrostatic golpeadores instead of adhesive ones. Can you tell me what is the advantage of electrostatic one over adhesive one ?

“People” must mean classical players, not flamenco players. Use adhesive ones.

The main thing about golpeadors is for the material to be thick enough to protect the top and hard/stiff enough to sound right. The thinner plastics like the electrostatic temporary protectors or the transparent thinner materials used for steel string pick guards aren’t really suited for protection from golpes and they also don’t ring out very well, the golpes can feel soft and sound not as loud and crisp.

There used to be a person called Alice of Granada or something like that (she also sold horses?) that sold proper golpeador material and Mad Inter used to have it, but they now appear to be selling the StewMac stuff online, which is too thin*. You want something at least .012” thick, which is more than a quarter millimetre. The .011” 3M stuff a lot of US based suppliers were selling is at the edge of being too thin. LMI used to carry some self-adhesive material that worked well, but it’s been a while since I bought some, so I don’t know if they still stock it.

P.S. if you do end up taking your guitar buying search to Madrid, MadInter is just north of the city and almost certainly will have the right stuff, even if it isn’t available online.

**edit* I just double checked and the StewMac stuff doesn’t seem to be available anymore. I was referring to the .008” clear pick guard self-adhesive sheeting they used to sell.

I double checked and the one I have been using on all guitars is 0.010 inches thick. It works exactly right as replacement material to whatever Luthiers we’re putting on Condes and such. If it is a little thinner as you suggest, then it is not noticeable.

RobF -> RE: golpeador in one piece-spanish word for it (Aug. 2 2023 16:31:29)

Could you post a link to the material with its spec? Then Rafa can get that. People can use what they want. .010” is too thin, IMO, but whatever.

P.S. I just took the time to measure the thickness on my 80s Conde with a dial micrometer and it comes out at .013”, which is in line with what I expected. Honestly, .010” is very thin for this purpose. But I don’t have a dog in this, I was just trying to be helpful so I’ll happily bow out and people can slap whatever works for them on their guitars and if they’re happy then all is well with the world.

P.P.S. Sorry bout my tone, yellow liquid in Cornflakes moment…

P.P.P.S. You know, it occurs to me that maybe if you used thicker golpeador material you wouldn’t have to be replacing them every six months…

Maybe it’s a North American expression…used when someone gets snarky and you ask them who p*ssed in their Cornflakes that morning.

I remember la peña de Bulerías in Córdoba where the tocaor was playing a Reyes, with a hole in the tapa (like Willie Nelson). I asked him why he did not fix it. He did not care, although the taller de Reyes was only 100 metros away.[:@]

Stringsbymail… I did not give that info because he was specifically looking IN SPAIN, where that material is not measured in inches anyway. There is a chance the measure they give is off, however, it is VERY thick, or rather just as thick as what standard Conde’s and Valencia guitars use by comparison. You can see my uses of it in this thread:

http://www.foroflamenco.com/tm.asp?m=78861&appid=&p=&mpage=1&key=golpeador%2Cremoval&tmode=&smode=&s=#78861

Perhaps you can or can’t tell by the pics how thick it is (the cordoba pics are perhaps better to compare, second change on page 2), by I can attest whatever they are selling it is the same as what was on there already that I had beaten through since 1997 or so. I did the math and it is 11 million plus golpes, approx every 7 years or so (not 6 months lol! And you can see it was various instruments. I have guitars not played much I will never change). I remember they used to say “.45mm”, so I don’t really know if their thickness is correct.

"when someone gets snarky and you ask them who p*ssed in their Cornflakes that morning" I understand, no problem, but "yellow cornflake moment" missed me completely![:D]

I suspect the material you received was 3M stuff, but perhaps a different thickness. I bought a bunch of sheets from them, too, and used it on a few guitars. I stopped because the material was both too thin for my purposes and also felt a little soft. I think sometimes the needs of a player and a maker don’t always align because the maker has to compete and meet expectations both reasonable and otherwise. What I found with the thinner material was to me it looked a little too lacking in presence (almost like there was no golpeador in certain lights) plus I brought a couple of guitars to Spain with golpeadors using that material and I noticed at least one player kind of looked at it funny (I know, sounds silly). So I stopped using it.

3M stuff…

I just measured a piece of the 3M stuff and it came out to 0.009” so maybe I had a bad batch (or it’s different than what you received, as 0.45mm is way thicker, that’s 0.017”). The LMI material I now use measures out at 0.012”. Not sure if they still sell it but it’s pretty good. It’s what I’ve been using for some time now.

LMI stuff…

Just to confuse the matter, I grabbed a golpeador that I removed from a guitar I made about ten years ago and it was using material I picked up in Spain, I think it was sourced from the Alice person. It’s nice and clear and hard and sounds good. It also makes a liar out of me because it’s only .010”, so the material itself matters. I would get more of that stuff if I could remember where I got it.

At any rate, if Rafa sends me his address and the postage doesn’t cost me too much I’ll send him a blank sheet of the 3M stuff, along with a pre-cut sheet. I doubt I’ll ever use it again but it should suit his purposes.

BUT, if Rafa is intending to use it in the manner I suspect he does, which is to put a golpeador onto a classical guitar, then I caution that the string height at the bridge matters. Because if the strings are too high and Ricardo happens to get his hands on the guitar and plays it, well, there’s a chance that he’ll hand back something that looks like Tom Cruise’s face in the last quarter of pretty well every movie he’s ever made…

Guitar with high action after the Ricardo treatment…

Tom Cruise’s face…

Hehe..yeah, it’s not that much used anymore and is best only used amongst friends when you want to pull somebody out of a bad mood.
