Ole!

Morante -> RE: Algo simple (May 1 2023 16:33:19)

When I first arrived in Cádiz, I accompanied a cantaor por Alegrías, playing as in the video.

He said "Muy bien, tienes compás y los tonos son correctos. Pero lo que ha tocado no es Alegrías."

It took me a while to understand that what was missing was "soniquete¨. Something that you will not learn, practising in your bedroom.[:@]

In Turkey I met a guy named Pico de Triana and accompanied him por bulerias. He said something similar that I am missing the “soniquete de Triana”. I asked him which accompanist had this elusive rhythmic expression whom I could listen to and study the toque. He replayed “no hay Nadie ni ninguna grabacion!!! Solo un tocaor en mi bodega en Triana!” … never the less it bothered me for years, until I lent my guitar to a tocaor from Triana playing for Maria Pages in Kennedy Center. I asked him about Pico and he knew him, and laughed when I asked about the “soniquete”. He said it was nothing, just play a bit slower that is all. [:D][:D]

I like his videos, as it is simple and practical stuff.
But I haven't seen any showing him with a singer...strange.

Anyway, here is one for you Morante

I think her recording engineer was teasing out the auto tuner and then fell asleep at the console, turning up to max accidentally.

Encarna Anillo showing the cante, a letra por alegrias

Recently they did a letra por tangos

And then here showing the tonos with the guitar in 4 different keys (not sure if keys is the right technical term? Should it be tonality?)

Morante -> RE: Algo simple (May 8 2023 16:57:11)

Can't say I like her singing, demasiado lloranda, although her husband (from Peru) plays well. (Can´t say that in presence of the family)

Her brother José is a much better singer and I understand that he offers cante tuition en directo por internet, at a price.

They were both forced into flamenco by their father from a very young age.

thanks for those. I think using the term "keys" is fine.

Right, Chileno. It does matter in the sense he admits the foreigner has more capability than the Gaditana inheritor of the arte. It is his opinion of course, a foreigner himself. Farruquito likes her cante, and his opinion counts as well. [;)]. I had dinner with her years ago when she came to DC with Farruquito. She was super nice, and admitted her husband was struggling to find work in Spain (he probably could have done better in Chile), as a flamenco guitarist. Since then his YouTuber career seems to have been pretty successful. In general it is the musician’s and music teacher’s future, as we have been noticing.
