That red tap plate and his two identical brothers … ok flamenco cloning 😂

Too many notes. Too many colors. It has this strange psychedelic effect on me. Sorry, I don't buy it.

He is more chico/flamenquito and high energy, but he can play grande/jondo.

Really enjoyed that. Thanks for sharing.

The solea with Maria works for me.

His other stuff is flamenco athletics, I’m not against it, but I connect with the solea accompaniment the most. He’s obviously able to do anything in flamenco and that’s no crime.

Mark2 -> RE: José El Ciego (Jan. 14 2023 17:02:18)

I'm a fan. There is some "flamenco athletics" here but it is original and hell, the guy is such amazing guitarist and flamenco.

Must admit I’m a fan of this guy. Listened to his rumba albums last winter, not for everyone but they just cheer me up! Guy is funny and brings something new to the genre.

I like his reggae rumbas!

Jose has been my favorite for ages. Saw him live in Spain.....lots of video effects here but the guy plays like a monster in real life as well.

Esoooooooooooooo! I'm really glad to see Jose developing a stronger presence (such as here, Solera flamenca, competitions, etc.). I think people may not have previously taken Jose seriously because of his sense of humor and his non-traditional approach, but he's surely carving out a path for himself among the well-respected and established flamenco artists. I get the sense that he's taking the more mainstream players by surprise and rising through the ranks and into stardom. I've been a fan of Jose before he started really exponentially rising, so it's nice to see his trajectory.

Hi Ramzi,

stardom

no such thing in Flamenco, they are all on EARTH and accessible (which is a good thing for aficionandos and students).

Very good player certainly.

I like him of course. The “Soleá” video is not really a Soleá in a technical sense. It is pure “Bulerías por Soleá”. Duquende does 3 Bulería Larga, 2 Bulería corta, and a Camaron type ending (or maybe it is Camaron, not sure). Now in each larga he does the old school extended cambio verse (Compañero de mi Alma). The first one 2:05 Jose resolves twice (C7-F) next one 2:50 and again at 3:50. Other players hold the C out in anticipation, only doing the F after the extension. Not sure how other folks feel about it.

Do you think he's drowning out Duquende, though? Like not letting him breathe? Trying to steal his thunder?

No. He might be a little nervous as he is pushing the tempo a lot. He finally backs off a bit toward the end. But again, this cante is typically done faster than Soleá, so it is not a big issue for me. He has a beautiful ripping arpegio and traditional general approach which I welcome. And Duquende is singing rather old school here, except that last letra, so I am sure he enjoys it. The tempo thing is the only small issue, and the double cambio everytime. And the salida in the intro, he did not let him finish the typical “ya ya ayyyy” on tonic….he was leaving a pause on the cadential pitch unresolved, and Jose started the falseta. Oooops.

JasonM -> RE: José El Ciego (Sep. 19 2024 22:53:42)

I know what you’re saying about space. It felt a little crowded in parts or maybe over did it with the arps? Not that I could have done it. Glad to see more of him, time to upgrade to a Conde!

But then it won't have the Behringer sticker!

Really nice stuff. I was trying to figure out where he is from, I guess in or around Granada? I like at 10:45 he says he started out with his cassette of Gipsy Kings. [:D]. Also the guy noticed like I did that he was “nervous” with Duquende (21:25), but he denied it and said he is always like this.[:D]

JasonM -> RE: José El Ciego (Oct. 29 2024 21:56:36)

What is that phrase he is always shouting in his videos, at 8:57? it’s so fast I can’t get it!

Ricardo -> RE: José El Ciego (Oct. 30 2024 10:42:33)

Ole un puro canastero!

Canastero is basket weaver, like "pure gypsy". I have heard it used to distinguish class, like pure gypsy, or those from the lower working class vs the integrated high class Gitano. Also to separate the gypies that do flamenco from the "real" gypsies, like in the caravan, etc. But it might have more subtlety even, like used to refer to those from Granada? Obviously he takes it with "pride". In fact that was one reason I am assuming he is from Granada. Hopefully some others can clarify as well.

JasonM -> RE: José El Ciego (Oct. 30 2024 15:51:18)

Thank you!! That was bothering me. Talk about lost in translation and cultural references!

There are old videos of him busking in Granada, but always possible he moved there from somewhere else.

Funny that interviewer was like “umm are you sure you weren’t nervous? Cause you looked pretty nervous there ” Lol
