I've never tried any guitar software but would like to have a go. Is Guitar Pro at €59.00 the right software to start with, in order to write down music and to read scores on the internet?

frhout why not try all the free stuff first. (Just cause it costs money doesn't make it better). Then the free trials. Then spend your bucks. Then tell us all what and why. Then I'll have a look[:D][:D] Someone here pointed me at Powertab and while you may want something better it has been great fun, has tons of facility, and is free. But there are others

There are scores that I'm interested but apparently can only open with GP5. I'll try the free version for 2 weeks and see how it works.

Power tab is awesome for doing your own stuff and there is a lot off tabs out there that are in power tab. I like tef files as well and well theres lots of them that are free get them all so you don;t miss out on any tabs. heres power tab http://www.power-tab.net/index.php

I agree, if finances are an issue go with the free stuff. However, the 'Real Sound Engine' for GP5 is just incredible, especially for nylon guitar. If you ever find yourself tired of listening to plain midi, give GP5 a try.

According to their website, GP5 can now import Power Tab tabs now too...

I like and use TablEdit. I also own Guitar Pro.

One thing I forgot to mention, and I don't know if this is possible with the other programs, but something else I like about GP5 is the ability to export whatever piece you're working on as a pdf file. This is handy because I like to print the piece I'm working on and afix it as per Marc Friedlander (Libre at GSI). Here's a visual of what I'm talking about. It's really a great idea.

The only problem with the free trial version of GP5 is that it's only for 2 weeks, probably not long enough to work on for those who can't play the guitar full time.

If you get the GuitarPro software, make sure that its the latest version and that its a legitimate copy. I got a cheap version from a well know auction website, and as its not the very latest edition, it won't let me open half of the tab files. And to make matters worse, you have to register the software to download updates, which prooved impossible with my illegitimate version. To be completely honest, there's nothing wrong with the free powertab software. But if the sounds are improved on GP5, maybe its the way to go... Jb
