norumba -> bring me up to speed on current guitarristas (Jul. 18 2022 6:38:44)
bring me up to speed on current guitarristas hi all, I've been out of the loop in the flamenco world for quite some time. Last time I re -entered this sphere - about seven years ago -I asked the question here of who amonng the cureent guitarists I should be checking out. People pointed me to Antonio Rey (love his technique, his musicality and majestic phrasing, but his soft jazz chords not so much) and Diego Del Morao, who i didnt check out too much at the time but am now exploring ,as well has his father, who I missed out on at the time.
Both are amazing, and I hear the legacy. I think their rhythmic phrasing and syncopation and use of space is so compelling. I especially like Moraito - the bulerias clip I know has been analysed a lot here which has been helpful to dive into. And while we can break down and study it in depth, theres an intangible funkiness ( in thr sense of good funk music) of groove and pocket he has in that clip that makes it one of the sexiest, swaggering bulerias I've yet to hear! The son has this kind of groove and pocket too.
His solo album Morao Morao is right up my alley, with all of the aforementioned qualities and some very dark harmonic choices that really speak to me.
7 years later, who else should i be listening to?

I am catching up on these clips, thanks folks!
I'm digging El Perla...playing is crisp and tight with some great rhythmic phrasing in his lines... i also really like Yerai's approach, his great use of space and slow organic buildup sets him apart and is really refreshing and unique.
Alejandro Hurtado is also a standout, i like the powerful passionate approach and big dynamic range with so much contrast, and again great use of space.
Those are my favorites... more digging in on all of the above.
thanks again!
