We visited my partner's aunt yesterday in a care home, and we took along a couple of her many photograph albums. She was quite a traveller. We came across these two photographs that look to be in some kind of Flamenco establishment, or even a Gypsy cave in Andalusia. It could be some kind of conceit for tourists, but anyway, aunty Jenny is in the photos with some people in Flamenco garb. She has dementia and doesn't remember being there, sadly, so could not elaborate on them. These would have been taken in the 1960s.

Looks like a tourist tablao, quite possibly in the Albaicin in Granada. See how they are sitting along the walls?

Thank you for that, I just looked that up and it does appear to be that very thing!

Great photos silddx. Very sad she can't remember that trip at all, I bet she had a lot of fun. That one older guy in the tie looks totally out of place😀

I am pretty sure it is Zambra Maria La Canastera in Sacromonte, Albaicin, Granada, which is probably the most famous one of the cuevas tourist flamenco shows and possibly the longest running (since the early 1960s.)

https://www.marialacanastera.com/en/

(I happened to have attended a show there in 2013 before my flamenco guitar journey started, so I thought I recognised the look)

Then and now, look at the near identical placement and types of pots and pans hung on the back of the cave, the little alcove at the back, the pictures and mirrors placement. Especially the black and white 1960s photo from their website that I included here - so much detail is identical or nearly so, for the visible parts in the same area as covered in your photo.

You can take it from there and probably find out who the dancers shown in your photos were.

That's amazing, thank you! It definitely looks like the same place. We are going to see if we can find any other photos to hopefully jog her memory. Thanks again!

La Canastera is probably a good guess. If it's not that, then it's probably something just down the street (i.e. another zambra in Sacromonte). As for who those girls are, no idea.

If you have facebook, you could try sending the pictures to Curro Albayzin and asking him. He'd probably know, and enjoy seeing the pictures.

Thanks for this! Might just do that.
