Do any of you know why the lower E string is placed relatively close to the edge of the fretboard? I don't know if it is on purpose or just an accident, but let's assume it is on purpose. If so, I can see why this may have been done. Gives more space to the high-e string so it is much less likely for it to slip over the fretboard edge as it is being pressed. And for the low-E string, it is really not a big problem that it is a bit closer to its nearest edge as the lateral movement of string is not symmetrical - the fretting hand comes from the underside, its weight pulling towards the same side, and any bending or movement mostly goes in the 'down' direction (towards the fretboard edge nearest the high-e string) - which for the low-e string means away from its nearest edge. Something like that.
