Jay4Jay -> remove Cordoba GK Studio golpeador (Dec. 28 2021 18:41:42)

hi All !

I want to replace the golpeador on a Cordoba GK Studio.
Because I want to replace it with another one , covering a larger part of the top.

Are the (factory) golpeadors glued to the top on this guitar?
Is there a way to remove the golpeador without harming the guitar top?

Thanks !

You can follow my process here. By the third guitar I got it right. NAPTHA and cotton balls and a couple hours.

As you see it can be an ordeal to take off. But if you want it larger then you could just add an extra piece of golpeador.

Good enough for Paco de Lucia. I don't know why he had this on his guitar?

That’s interesting. Wonder if it’s for holding Vaseline instead of putting it next to the heel? Guitar looks pretty
Darn good for a gigging guitar.

We once had to put the same thing on a guitar of Antonio Jero. His golpes had eaten half of the wood of the bridge!

If you look close at the bridge you can see his pinky nail was cutting into the finish and behind the bridge. When his guitar was red you can see the wear marks in that spot as well.

It looks like his nails have stripped some varnish from the treble side of the bridge, so maybe he sometimes had his fingers there, and below there where the plastic is, when he was using his thumb and thus the protection over the spruce.
Oops, looks like Ricardo and I are in sync.

hi Ricardo,

From the linked thread, I understand that the Naphtha is used to dissolve the adhesive layer and remove it with the cotton balls and cotton swabs/Q-tips.

But is the Naphtha also used to remove the Golpeador itself?
How?
Apply Naphtah on top of the Golpeador ?
Or -at the edges- between Golpeador and the guitar?

Start with pointy corners, they are easiest to pull-up. Use Q tip w naphtha on top and along edges until it gives. Use a dull knife or fingernail to start lifting until you have enough lifted to grip with thumb and fingers. As you gently pull it up keep rubbing the wet q tip underneath at contact point (side to side a straight line usually). I Usually pull off the entire golpeador as step one, releasing the tap plate from the adhesive then deal with the clean up of the the actual adhesive left on the face of the guitar using cotton balls. step one takes 20 to thirty minutes, but step two takes an hour or more if you work alone.

Step two can go a lot faster with a crew of seven.

That is, unless you use one of the road crews employed by my city, in which case you’ll have six guys in hard hats standing around watching while one guy goes at it with a shovel.

Minimum of 3 certified golpeador inspectors for every one remover or it ain’t code.

Does the guitar's top need any preparation before fitting a new Golpeador?
Like removing the naphtha residue, or does it evaporate?

Here the details on how I removed the golpeador and the glue.
Saying big thanks to all that responded to this topic !
There may be other ways, and no guarantee this works on other /all guitars /golpeadors. Nothing guaranteed !

The golpeador itself was easily removed from the guitar.
Did'nt take more than a few minutes.
For this part I used a hair dryer, blowing hot air on the golpeador.
With caution , it didn't need to be really hot to get the golpeador off.

Then the glue that remains sticking to the guitar top......
I used Zippo lighter fluid to dissolve the glue. Only a small amount is needed, sprayed on makeup removal cotton pads.
Then I could remove the glue with my fingers.
Took a total of approx. 1 hour.
Two pictures attached of the removal of the glue.
