Romanza -> Not flamenco - not interested!! (Mar. 23 2006 9:38:41)

Hi guys. I was just wondering how people feel about other kinds of music and how much flamenco they listen to compared to other musical styles.

I ask because I have noticed that since I 'discovered' flamenco a year or so again I have slowly but surely stopped listening to all other kinds of music. I cant even listen to the radion for more than a few minutes without starting to crave hit of flamenco! My record collection is gradually being overtaken by Spanish cds. And if I'm not listening to flamenco I only seem to be interested in alternative or world music, Cuban, Salsa or something with a bit of passion and life.

Music I used to like, rock, pop etc just sounds woefully inadequate, the voices pathetic, the lyrics infantile! Now when I look at the over the top posturing of 'rock guitarists' on tele I feel nothing but scorn and even pity that they do not understand the true beauty of the guitar!! What is happening?? Has anyone else experienced this? Will I ever listen to anything else again???

i respect all types of music, love the delta blues and trad irish music, i listen to them all as well as flamenco. though i have made the choice to study flamenco guitar exclusively for the next few years, as its the only type of guitar playing i really want to be good at.

that being said i usualy dont' got through the day without listening to one piece of por bulerias, but thats cause im trying to learn this rythmn by constant exposure to it.[:D]
god help me.[:D]

XXX -> RE: Not flamenco - not interested!! (Mar. 23 2006 9:55:28)

Exactly, I feel the same.

I bothered long about it, but now I came to the conclusion its not so important to hear every kind of music. Why should it be?
Just hear what u like.

Ps: My "need" for classical music, which I dont hear as often as flamenco though, has not been replaced by flamenco at all.
Sometime I will put the Janis Joplin CD back on, Im pretty shure [:)]

John O. -> RE: Not flamenco - not interested!! (Mar. 23 2006 11:52:17)

The more I play, the less I listen to flamenco unless I'm looking for new influences. I'll listen to anything extreme or aggressive that gives me a kick - metal, hip hop, free-jazz, or anything that gives me that insane rush like flamenco can. If I'm in a really strange mood I'll listen to Bowie's 1.Outside, for example.

Miguel de Maria -> RE: Not flamenco - not interested!! (Mar. 23 2006 14:08:32)

No, not for me, I have gone through only flamenco phases but I keep looking for other things. I studied classical for a year or so, now I'm into sambas/bossas and a little into old-school jazz. There's just too much great stuff out there for provincialism, at least that's how I feel.

JBASHORUN -> RE: Not flamenco - not interested!! (Mar. 23 2006 14:58:06)

To me, listening to only one type of music is like only eating one type of food... you'll get bored of it eventually, and it might not be healthy.

IMHO diversity is a good thing, and I find I require different musics to suit different moods.

Although I have to admit that I place a strong emphasis on music containing guitars. But most types of music that do feature guitars are cool with me.

And even the ones that don't have a valid time and place.

Florian -> RE: Not flamenco - not interested!! (Mar. 23 2006 15:01:12)

I like everything it just depends what mood i am in, if i am driving i like up tempo, Orishas - Emigrante always does the job, is Rap mixed with Salsa.

Of i am having a romantic night i have something brazilian playing.

If i feel like beeing inspired and wanna learn something or get a new idea il have a flamenco guitar solo cd playing.

If i feel like feeling il listen to cante.

there is so much brilliant music out there besides flamenco its always a hard decision what to listen to.

edgar884 -> RE: Not flamenco - not interested!! (Mar. 23 2006 15:07:02)

To appreciate Flamenco and nothing else, is your own taste.

I have found that I listen to a lot of Flamenco but, I still listen to lots of other music.
It helps me with my composing.

I think, music is like 2 pengelium clocks on a wall after a while the pengiliums will be swinging at the same time. So if all you listen to is one kind of music, dont expect to be able to do something original or different when it comes to composing.[:)]

JBASHORUN -> RE: Not flamenco - not interested!! (Mar. 23 2006 15:13:09)

In fact, now that I mention it... I can't think of a single musical genre that doesn't have at least one good thing to offer.

On my desk I currently have a Camaron CD and the debut album by the Editors.

Both are excellent [:)]

Eventually you clime out of that Flamenco canyon and realize there is other music out there.[:)]

Yep, I'm serious... my mother is Austrian, and we have a few yodelling relatives! Personally, I can't stand yodelling!!! But in Austria there are plenty of traditional people (like old farmers) who appreciate this sort of thing. Gimme a good bulerias anyday, but like I said, a matter of taste.

Yes I suspect it may just be quite a long 'honeymoon period' kind of thing..[:)]

But from someone who used to pride themselves on their diverse and 'ecletic' musical tastes....I mean, I must have 'Entre dos Aguas' on my MP3 player about 6 times from various albums for god's sake!

I'm not saying I think all other music is 'crap', just that it doesn't really do it for me much at the moment..

well thats all i was saying too, i just cant stand it, really really cant stand it, but i wasent refering to the Austrian yodelling thats cool !! i was talking more about the German yodelling who use compleatly different keys to yodlle in.

Like instead of going Yodlee yodellee I HYY they go Yodalee Yodalee A HAa witch i hate !! is compleatly wrong.

LOL! OK, OK its cool. But I think Yodelling is a bit like flamenco in a way... there are patterns within the music that only an insider can recognise. To an untrained ear, its just noise, but to those that know its the equivalent of a fandangos...

Or something like that! [:D]

Actually, Florian...one of the guys to make a really big hit in the UK in the 60's with Yodelling is your fellow Australian, Frank Ifield!

www.frankifield.com

Here's a quote from one of your regional newspapers...

"It was not a conventional funeral - from the slideshow that greeted mourners at the Wahroonga Seventh-Day Adventist Church to the caskets being carried out to a recording of Frank Ifield's Yodelling Mad..."

If you're a fan of yodelling you just gotta listen to "Homesick Blues" [:D]

cheers

Ron

I think there's also a band called Focus, which used yodelling to some degree. one of their hits was called "Hocus Pocus" I think. It actually wasn't that bad for yodelling... surprising what you can do with it when you add some lyrics and guitars.
