joevidetto -> Share some of your favorite Alegrias pieces that are not "somber" or "minor" (Aug. 22 2021 14:17:10)

Hi all,

I really like the Alegrias form (and - is it cantinas ? - those in C major ?), but only those that are upbeat, energetic, happy and exciting (of course even in these the silencios is in a more minor, sad mood, which makes the return to the happy energetic key so much more exciting : )

Alegrias pieces that are more somber and minor throughout, for whatever reason, don't do it for me.

I'm not familiar with a lot of Alegrias pieces, and I was wondering if you could offer suggestions for those that fit the category I described. My favorites in that category that I am aware of are probably identical with most of your favorites - Paco's La Perla de Cadiz and Barrosa, and Manolo's Puerte de Principe. I love Riqueni's compositions but for some reason I feel like most of his Alegrias pieces fall into the more somber / minor categories.

Can you suggest some other pieces that would fall into the more energetic, happy, exciting categories ? - especially for artists I may not have heard of (e.g. the more obscure guys that aren't as famous) - or perhaps I have overlooked some from the big guns ?

I had a friend, Jesús del Río, member of the Catedral de Flamenco de Jerèz, who was fed up with people who claimed to know something about flamenco. His test was to play some alegrías, then some cantiñas and ask them to distinguish.

I said "Jesús, but this is a very easy test". He replied: most of them fail it[:@]

I was impressed by these guys from Barcelona of all places.

Of course in Cadiz is the best stuff:

Alonso is very ill at the moment, so this is a homenaje to my favourite cantaor and a good friend.

Absolutely great shares Ricardo and Morante - nothing can replace the excitement of a human being singing alegrias. When looking for some new pieces to play, I'm stuck with instrumentals because I don't have access to a singer, and for me flamenco has become an personal hobby rather than something I look to perform publicly. Do you have any other instrumental favorites ?

I am actually looking for some Cantinas tabs - have not played in the key of C at all. Wondering if there are any good transcribed pieces (if free even better) that somebody can point me to. I got a few falsetas by ear but would be great to build up the collection.

Cantiñas are almost always sung in E. Alegrías is almost always sung in C.

To accompany el baile por Alegrías, the cantaores use E. This is because they usually mix alegrías and cantiñas (the dancer normally neither knows nor cares) and because the dance is usually rematado por bulerías de Cádiz, which is in E, which makes everthing easier.

Thanks, I guess to clarify, I would like to build some vocabulary in the key of C por alegria, any pointers to anything transcribed (free or paid) are appreciated

Actually, these guys are not from Barcelona.
Jason M accompanies Rafael Nadal. As far as I know both have the right attitude.

Still active. Hope it continues this way.
When I see guys like you or Mr. Marlow and others who have been on the foro more than a decade, I think I'm just getting started.

Jesus 2007! .. That's ages ago. Pretty poor post ratio though from me! I dip in and out.

So...
That's Miguel poveda and chicuelo on that video.

They are pretty big time. So I was joking about a bright future etc.
And there are from Barcelona.

Jason M? Accompanies Rafael nadal? Isn't hes tennis player?

I think Jason m on the foro had chicuelo as his profile pic

JasonM -> RE: Share some of your favorite Alegrias pieces that are not "somber" or "minor" (Sep. 7 2021 21:17:00)

Yes, right. Miguel Poveda and Nadal look alike. Nadal on the left, Poveda on the right.
