Well, as you may have noticed last year's competition never happened for very obvious reasons. This year it has been scheduled for October and I really think that they will be able to go through with it as the rates of positives are going down. I don't have any more information than what is on the webpage below but most of the relevant information is there.

There was some interesting discussion here http://www.foroflamenco.com/tm.asp?m=323327&appid=&p=&mpage=1&key=competition&tmode=&smode=&s=#323327 about other years and it seems that the setup will be the same this year. I have met some people who are very passionate about the guitar every year during this competition and hope to meet some more this year. This year I can’t, but next year is possible. I like that double tops are not included, but the contract for the winner to have two guitars sold to GSI for $3500.00 each is super weak. I’d go just to make connections and drink cana. But if I won ( that would never happen) I’d be insulted by the offer from GSI, it’s absolutely paltry BS.

It’s good GSI will sell your guitars, it’s bad they will sell it for few money, and not promote seriously your work.
Is the guitar winning the 1st prize of such a festival just 3.500 $ worth?
You may say it’s an honour to have your guitars represented by a famous dealer (arguably) but the exception here is that a guitar sold for few money (even in GSI) passes for being an average guitar.

Here are some references from GSI. All of these makers participated in the competition in one of its 3 editions. Almost all of them were relatively unknown until GSI bought guitars from them. I think it is worth it for some makers. If this looks too much like an advert for GSI you can just delete but I think it is relevant to the conversation. In any case, it is a good time to visit Granada and as Stephen says, make connections and drink cañas.

To anyone who hasn’t yet figured it out, the prize is not monetary - a mutual commitment to provide/purchase an instrument at dealer cost is not a monetary reward. The association with the dealership is in itself the prize, and that is a significant point, especially when the dealership is so heavily involved in the inner workings of the event.

It’s up to the participants in the affair and also to the outside observer to decide for themselves how comfortable they are with this arrangement and with what it implies.

A more appropriate prize would be to offer $7000.00 for one guitar, plus the prestige of association with a known dealer. If the guitar that wins in a guitar town like Granada can’t be awarded a $ 7000.00 contract then maybe the contest needs a more well heeled benefactor. I can sell a $7000.00 guitar if I put my back into it, and if I put my back into it I demand that fee.

So I’m back to not giving a crap about the competition, but being in a town where I might get a drink with John el Ray or a Bellido or gasp~ hear a singer sing solea. If it were me I’d enter a flamenco guitar with pegs and not expect anything, but people would relate to that who know flamenco and you’d probably get a few friends out of that.

David Serva and Marote used to hang out together in a bar in Lavapies called Bar Marbella. The running joke was between them that one would say you’re washed up and when you retire you’ll be playing in the train station on the anden. The other would say, sure that will happen, but I’ll be playing your toque because mine is too good for the train station.

There might be two sides to this, one side would be too little money offered, therefore lending the idea that GSI is gravitating toward a middle range instrument for their market place, or perhaps wanting to give a wider reward for the contestants. Either way would create certain debate since no respected guitar builder, rightly so, would want to participate in a contest with such minimum reward.

However, I applaud GSI for being involved and promoting the art regardless of the fact that there will always be a downside to a promotional effort like this. And I could name quite a few but to be nice about it, I won't :-)

I accept your challenge, I will ponder on which might be the appropriate bar or peña to meet in here in Granada while you think up suitable insults for guitar-makers to trade. 2022 you said? See you then. Actually that is the 100 year anniversary of the Cante Jondo competition organised by Manuel de Falla. Rather fitting.

The Antonio Marin Montero Guitar-making Competition is an opportunity not only to measure your work against others but also to show your guitar to David Collet of Guitar Salon International. Each contestant will have an individual interview with him before the competition starts. I am always happy to see folks from the forum here in Granada. I would love to win it with one of my Cadenza guitars! Unfortunately it wouldn't win based on the judging criteria. I only do an open pored finish and the rosette maybe to basic for the judges taste.

Still if it did win, it would be interesting to see how GSI would try to sell a guitar that could be imported for cheaper directly from myself.

Still it's not a particularly interesting prize for anyone with a remote reputation and the fact that one of the judges is also from GSI actually muddies the waters as his bias could come into play when thinking about salability. After all he's not going to want to invest in a guitar that he doesn't think would suit his market.

I may have said this before but my time with GSI stipulated that I keep the same prices on my website as their advertised pricing.

This is done all the time with some guitar companies; standard business practice.

The difference here is that my Cadenza already has an established market price that I would not be willing to raise and the prize money is more than the guitar would be. I wouldn't be 'with' GSI either as it's a prize that we would both be obligated to forfil.

I wouldn't enter any way it was just a thought.

Another thought I had is that

If I entered and won against a load of people that hadn't built many guitars then the consensus would be 'of course he won, he's got years of experience' and if I didn't win then 'wow his guitars must be terrible if he can't even beat a new builder'! So either way it is a loss. (you can read I as yourself if you have been building guitars for many years)

When we are talking about guitar making competion, I can't shake the image of a kind of Masterchef/great british bake off format.

6 builders all at their seperate benches. Building on the clock. With tension building music and a couple of dodgy hosts/judges peering over the makers shoulder and frowning as they carry out some detailed work.

Then metaphorically tearing apart their finished guitar with some scathing criticisms.[:D]
