I would like to suggest a song that is in English with a Spanish lilting melody entitled "Spanish is the Loving Tongue." It is not Spanish kitsch, as in sun, sangria, and painted fans. In fact, it refers to Northern Mexico rather than Spain. It is based on an old poem entitled "A Border Affair," and it has been sung by many, primarily folk singers: Tom Paxton, Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, Emmylou Harris, and others. It's actually very pretty, and your 85 year old with the birthday might enjoy it. I have included the lyrics here. Spanish Is the Loving Tongue Spanish is the loving tongue, Soft as music, light as spray. 'Twas a girl I learned it from, Living down Sonora way. I don't look much like a lover, Still I say her love words over. Often, when I'm all alone, "Mi amor, mi corazón." The nights when she knew that I'd ride, She would listen for my spurs. Throw that big door open wide, Raise those laughing eyes of hers. How my heart would nigh stop beating, When I hear her tender greeting. Whispered soft for me alone, "Mi amor, mi corazón." The moonlight on the patio, Old señora nodding near. Me and Juana talking low So the Madre couldn't hear. How the hours would go a-flying, Till too soon, I'd hear her sighing In her sorry little tone, "Mi amor, mi corazón." I haven't seen her since that night. I can't cross the line, you know. I'm wanted for a gambling fight, And like as not, it's better so. Still I always sort of missed her Since that last sad night I kissed her. Left her heart, but I lost my own, "Adios, mi corazón." (Traditional; Adapted by Tom Paxton, 1968) Bill
