For those who have attended is taking two classes too much? I was thinking about the guitar class and the cante accompaniment class but they are each two hours. Wondering if I’d be biting off too much. What say you guys?

You can do. But i have to warn you your needed siesta will be significantly reduced 😂

Thanks! I went for both. I can't believe that at 63 years old, after thirty five years, I'm going back to Spain and get to study with an all time great. I have wanted to go for years. Family and business took priority. The kids are grown, and the business is being transitioned to the older daughter.

😂 yeah. The evening festivities become slightly less relaxed when you have the niggling feeling that you gotta be on the ball come morning. (Even with one class)

So you're Going to Sanlucar this year Mark? Even with the pandemic? Where do you live?

Mark2 -> RE: Carmen/Gerardo (May 8 2021 23:33:55)

Hey Stu,
Yep I’m going. Booked the course and the room. Just have to sort the flights. I live a few miles south of San Francisco. I might spend a night in New York. The idea of 11 hours on a plane is horrific. I’m likely gonna meet the wife and spend a week in the UK after the class. I got the j&j vaccine about three weeks ago so I’m feeling I’ve done what I can to prevent spreading the ‘rona.

I did both when I went and I don’t regret it. The cante accompaniment course was small enough that it was a class rather than a demonstration, whereas the sessions with Gerardo are really just opportunities to video him playing his stuff slowly from relatively close up. By the end of the week, I was so sleep-deprived I could hardly stand up—because it’s very hard to leave Contratiempo once things get going.

Stu -> RE: Carmen/Gerardo (May 9 2021 13:44:03)

Good stuff.

So will you have to quarantine when you return?
Things may be much better by July but at the moment for us in the UK. ReturNing from Spain requires a period of quaratine/self isolation.I guess you'd be Subject to that if you went to the UK after? (But maybe not if you're vaccinated)

I still may go. Just deciDing. But more a matter of getting time off work for me.

What year were you there?

Brendan -> RE: Carmen/Gerardo (May 9 2021 15:45:47)

2012

Mark2 -> RE: Carmen/Gerardo (May 9 2021 16:01:51)

Holy Moly! I’m such a Yank! I haven’t even thought about travel restrictions in other countries. I’d hate to spend the whole time wearing a mask, if I can even get in. More research.....

Right now it's mandatory in all public spaces (inside and outside). Looking at the current schedule for vaccination, it also seems unlikely that anyone under 50, except so-called "essential workers", will be vaccinated before the end of the summer. Personally, I'm in my 30s and don't expect to be able to get it before October.

Last time I checked, you were supposed to have a negative test taken a few days before your flight to be able to enter, but there wasn't any quarantine period except for a small list of countries (and IIRC the US wasn't one of them). But all of that changes really fast.

JasonM -> RE: Carmen/Gerardo (May 10 2021 17:53:20)

That’s awesome Mark! I was wondering the same about taking two classes. I’d like to take cepillo’s percussion class. Definitely give us a report of how it goes.

Stu -> RE: Carmen/Gerardo (May 11 2021 18:03:46)

Ah sorry Mark. Didn't mean to burst your bubble. In a few months time, with the decent progress being made, it may not affect things all that much eh?

Was there some stipulation that you could only do other classes if you were enrolled on gerardos main that course? Is that still a thing?

Mark2 -> RE: Carmen/Gerardo (May 11 2021 21:40:32)

No problem Stu, I admit I am having second thoughts. The idea of taking classes, seeing concerts, etc, all masked up that time of year(BTW how hot it is it around that time?) is not that attractive. I work mostly alone in a big warehouse so I haven't really had to deal with wearing a mask all day. I have done it enough to know it's uncomfortable, especially in hot weather. My adult daughter says I'm being a wimp, just go she says.

The other concern is that few foreigners show up this year. My Spanish is pretty dismal so I was hoping to be able to meet fellow students who are staying at the hotel in question, so I'm feeling uncertain.

In California, half of the population is vaccinated, and I foolishly made the assumption that since we are in a place where things are opening, didn't really think about UK and Europe. Wife was planning to go to Ireland, but that looks sketchy at best.

I didn't see anything about having to enroll in a specific class to be able to attend another.

While spain is hot in general down there, Sanlucar is on the beach so it is not bad at all, cool breezes often. At night, there have been times a sweatshirt was required outdoors. You do have to do some serious walking up hill to get to class and some events.

You don’t have to take guitar class to take cante class or cajon etc, but you used to have to take guitar class if you wanted to take Carrion’s cante accompaniment or the repetition of Gerardo’s class. The reason is they are like secondary guitar classes and like half the price of Gerardo’s class...so it is a marketing thing. Some of my friends love Gerardo but are advanced guitarists so take other classes like cante or the “fusion” stuff.

Stu -> RE: Carmen/Gerardo (May 12 2021 21:10:28)

As far as I'm aware. Uk vax figures are one of the best. There's real hope we cracked it here. I think france, Spain, etc are catching up now. I think by mid July things will be looking better still so you should be ok....I think.
