joevidetto -> Are you a digital hoarder ? (Mar. 20 2021 13:58:54)

Recently I got excited at discovering the existence of Leiva's PDL transcription books - I had stopped flamenco for quite some time, and with covid restrictions and working from home, crept back into it.

I spent a couple of weeks figuring out how to get the best deal on those books, and deciding which I wanted - and I wanted ALL of them.

Then, I went through my Flamenco collection of transcriptions, books, CD/DVDs, previously recorded guitar lessons - and I was embarrassed. I've already got more stuff that I love that I can't work through in my lifetime. I probably can't even play 5% of the the material I've amassed. And I realized - I'm not a musician, I'm a music lover who happens to enjoy learning how some of the pieces are played.

With that - I decided NOT to buy new books - but to dive into some of those that have been sitting there unused for many years. For me, that turned out to be Fauche's transcription books of Moraito, Tomatito, Pepe Habicheula, Riqueni, and Gerardo...actually, I should bring 5% down to 1% - because in these 5 alone I am nowhere near 5%. In fact, my new goal might be 1 piece from each book.

For conversation purposes - what percentage of your flamenco materials can you actually play - or at least played at one time, and maybe forgotten ?

If you relate to any of this - maybe I can nudge you to pick a book or transcription that has sat there for years - and publicly (in the Foro) commit to learning at least one thing from it in the next month : )

Aside from personality (and there are shows about people who save and hoard to the point of dysfunction) - I kind of think my music hoarding comes from my early days when I wanted to perform music, but could never quite get it right from listening to the record - and good, note-for-note transcriptions were unavailable at that time, though they had begun to come out. If I had the transcription, I could learn - so collecting these things I think became a hobby in itself. These days - and for quite some time - you can find decent or excellent transcriptions for almost ANYTHING you want to play, but the habit lingers on.
