Thanx guys,

You know Jason I am feeling kinda stupid now cause I only ordered up a couple yellowish shellac and the button Ethen recommended as well as a yellow analine dye, what I neglected to mention was I never bothered to shellac my number two build as well and thought just for fun I could have got some bright orange dye and went all Condi on her wood ;)
I did a bunch of crazy stuff with her sound bars and bracing and she never forgave me for that or she was pissed cause I let our minions take her down to the river, bonfire parties, and dog knows where else. Got a kick bumping into someone who said, hay man what’s his name had your guitar at our party and we passed it around and had some fun with her. Happened a few times. Part of me thinks I should give her a new set of strings, spend a week or two rubbing shellac into her, and see what she sounds like.

Really kinda shocking how much of a change just doing the back of my number one made, less woody on the bottom end and brightened up the midrange a lot and the top just a little. Most likely I’m just more attuned to subtle sonic changes most wouldn’t?

Added one more learning curve circle jerk the other night. Knew when I put that naphtha into the vary same size and shape bottle I kept m alcohol in could cause a problem; yep took three weeks but going out to the shop for a third session of the day and buggered up a top nicely, it was the smell I noticed first, it all smelled odd, also there was no drag at all with the manuca as I padded around in small circles, and that odd smell, about the third or forth time I charged the pad i saw all the big black N’s I had drawn around the bottle. Knew better then to use black sharply...

I’m actually shellacking all five in the photo below, my arms are kinda sore and my hands said this morning, no playing for 48 hours or else.

Patiently waiting for my order from shellac.net...

HR

Is anybody else having trouble reading page 1 of this thread? On my iPad it rapidly toggles between two fonts and page sizes, might just be a problem on my end though.

Noticed it doesn’t self justify on my mind phone, I see that often when someone posts some odd content, page two renders correctly.

My shellac/dye order showed yesterday but down to -15f Up here and my shop I won’t stay warm enough to play with alcohol without the wood stove going and not wanting anything going boom. You get the picture. But stay tuned! I did get some battery powered heated socks for my problem foot which developed chilblains, oy, anyway it’s much happier now.

Good, lol. Don’t do anything yet, haha. I’ve been down for the count and pretty well out of it since just before the New Year but I’ve been wanting to contribute to this. I’ve just not been in any shape to think clearly about anything for well over a month now, I’ve pretty well accomplished absolutely nothing yet this year.

I’ve started composing a reply covering the experiments with spraying tinted shellac I did last summer, but it’s going to be too long to put here so I’ll start a new thread. It might take a day or two to get it all prepared.

I’m hoping you’ll also participate in the new thread, once posted, if you’re so inclined. It would be nice to know more about your experience with using spray equipment from your aviation days.

*edit* Post is now up...

I've been getting a real nice color with this "Beige" shellac from shellac.net lately. Also getting better at applying it evenly I think [:)] or at least making any unevenness in color look "old worldy" instead of just "blotchy" [:D]

Andy,
Looks nice.

Did you start/use only with the beige shellac? Just a matter of padding in an even organized fashion to keep the color constant? Bridge in or off? On the thread Pali started titled Birdseye Maple he shows how he shellacs before glueing on the fretboard then doing the final padding after glueing and fretting etc.

Buried with a year of outdoor chores that haven't been done so not in the shop for another week but greatful to be walking hobbling around outside in the Springtime! The cedar wedges I ordered showed up in the mail the other day so think I'll make some time to saw it up seeing as it's raining today ;)

Planning a trip to Boston in the fall to visit my Daughter if it's safe to travel, hoping to drive down for a visit to the Cullpepper shop if the stars align appropriately.

Looks OK on late 2012 Mac Mini, macOS Catalina 10.15.7. Also OK on iPhone 8 plus, iOS 13.3. Page 1 looks goofy on iPad Pro (10.5 inch), iPadOS 13.7. I haven’t updated to the latest iPadOS.

HR, thanks. Yeah, it is just the beige shellac, no extra color. For me it is the perfect balance of adding some color but not dark enough to cause problems. I polish with the bridge on, which can make things tricky, but it's a matter of being mindful of where the finish tends to build up more or less and compensating accordingly. Enjoy the spring weather and stop by here any time!
