Richard Jernigan -> ¡Olé Ricardo! (Nov. 22 2020 19:35:29)

Am I the only one who watched Ricardo's Youtube concert last night? It was great!

Ricardo played several original solo pieces, plus one of Paco's from the trio. His wife Sara Jerez danced guajiras, soleá, bulerias, and sevillanas. I didn't catch the name of the percussionist-cantaor but he is a fabulous cajon virtuoso and sang very well. In addition to his other work, he and Ricardo performed a piece by Ketama.

I have seen Ricardo and Sara perform live several times before, and have enjoyed it a lot. In the concert we got to hear more of Ricardo's solo work, very polished and exciting.

The concert was part of the John Marlow series, honoring Ricardo's classical guitarist father. The performance by Ricardo, Sara and the percussionist/cantaor was a fitting tribute.

Nooo... I would have watched it had I known about it. Is there a way to access the recording?

Thanks for the review Richard!

Yes guys sorry I am notoriously bad at using foro to advertise my gigs over the years. I always used to leave it up to the organizers to do their own advertising for stuff. In this case it was filmed a few days ago with mistakes included like really “live”, and I was thinking about how difficult it was to do that with no audience, and we were not permitted to view it before it was aired .... for some reason I find real live playing on stage less nerve wracking then that was. My poor wife had not danced any gigs this entire pandemic so she was kind of nervous about me advertising to the hardcore flamenco people we know lol. I didn’t know how the sound was gonna come out or anything. I did share the link or was tagged on facebook, but honestly watching it Saturday night was pretty nail biting for the 3 of us! [:D]. But I guess in the end the mistakes weren’t too bad. The singer/percussionist was Francisco Orozco “el Yi-Yi”, from Barcelona, he is top notch “Camaronero” type singer. He grew up on the Ketama stuff so I wanted to do something different. The trio tune was “Chiquito” I did as a solo trading off compases with the cajon.

For those of you that missed it and want to see it, it will be archived at marlow.org and after the season is over in spring, all the concerts of the season will be available to watch. In order to access them you might have to sign up or become a member or something, I will find out. This concert was free but they were asking “donations” from people, like the typical concert ticket price type thing.

I saw the show, amazing playing from Ricardo, of course!

I thought about posting the link :/ but I didn’t want to step on Ricardo’s toes, wasn’t sure if there was some reservations given the whole online format. I’m sure performing without the live audience energy was a psychological mind f$$$

Chiquito was really awesome to see being a trio fan and didn’t expect that. Picado runs way up the neck! The Ketama number had great lines and added some nice variety to the set list . Yi Yi is a great singer and cajon player, really impressive.

Can you let us know once it's been archived?

Yes. I think the last concert of the season is in March or April.

I'll be interested to see/hear this if it ever ends up archived. (marlow.org is down at the moment?)

While I've not seen any "LIKE" buttons on posts around here, I've certainly appreciated the vast wealth of music and related knowledge Ricardo emits around here. He appears to invest massive amounts of his time showing people how to do things etc.
A typical comment from Ricardo can easily consume hours in coming to terms with its content.
What a fantastic human RESOURCE (sorry, not trying to objectify you, Ricardo :D) in addition to great musician etc.

Here is a short Alegrias performance that just aired that was a different performance (not a full concert, it was an interview for the dancer Edwin Aparicio). Not sure how long the video stays up.

Whiskey barrels...in Jerez they like to use these for sherry.

Second time in Jerez I did the guiri thing of the trip round Gonzalez-Byass bodegas, actually really interesting. They have that room with all the barrels signed by JFK, Sofia Loren, Paco de Lucía etc.

Here is another concert that was cancelled that we filmed last weekend. They will run it through January (facebook says from December 16-Jan 15) from a ticket paywall, $25. I am playing with Roberto Castellón and Omayra Amaya (Carmen Amaya’s great niece).
