Had this Cedar-Blanca for about a month. Happy with it, especially because I got it new for $2000 because its a blem. Can you spot it? Its not just something in the finish.

OK I'll tell you. Look at the 12th fret. Its not even with the top of the body. John says he mis-measured and cut the sound hole about an eighth inch too high. But it was such a good piece of wood he did not want to discard it. Not really sure why that meant the 12th fret had to be equally high from the top of the guitar. But he's the luthier.

If it a good guitar, and it will be, coming from this sourc. Be happy. You are lucky to have such a treasure.

Wow. I inspected a Friederich that had about the same 12th fret placement (maybe a couple mm further from the body join) and I assumed it was intentional, for slightly better access to the higher frets.

That was a fun challenge, Give us another!

I looked for a good five minutes, the finish, binding, sound hole, bridge, and gave up. Nice looking guitar. The couple of necks I made I was really stressed out about getting the 12fret lined up with the sides, and at least here, couldn’t even notice.

I was going to say it's a cedar top, but I suppose that wasn't the answer you had in mind!

Ha Ha good one. I was actually shopping for a spruce top but came across this one. I just called John and left a message asking if he had any guitars available for purchase. He called right back told me he had this fabulous deal on a blem so I grabbed it. He also warned me it has Peghed mechanical tuners which he is not fond of. But John says just about every blanca he makes now has them because that's what the customer wants. I'm OK with them, I guess.

I asked him about spruce tops. John says he doesn't make them anymore because he thinks they sound too "nasal" to use his word. He also said this is probably the last single top guitar he plans to make. He's making all double tops now. He is also semi retired so plans to make only about 4 guitars a year.

I'm happy with the sound of the cedar top. The grain is very straight and tight and sounds very good, with good highs and a bit mellow. That suits me because I play classical too.
