Morante -> Museo del Prado flamenco (Sep. 29 2020 23:23:00)

Mr. T -> RE: Museo del Prado flamenco (Sep. 30 2020 16:19:52)

Gracias Morante, keep posting!

RobF -> RE: Museo del Prado flamenco (Sep. 30 2020 18:07:16)

Is this like Riverdance for Spanish people?

Ricardo -> RE: Museo del Prado flamenco (Sep. 30 2020 18:55:05)

Considering it is illegal to take photos in there, they should all be in prison for doing this.

Wow, I didn't know this. Last time I was there (2016) they did not have that policy.

RobF -> RE: Museo del Prado flamenco (Oct. 1 2020 1:03:07)

My response was tongue in cheek and I realize they produced the video to promote tourism, which is important.

I went to the Prado a couple of years ago and they definitely weren’t allowing the taking of pictures then. That being said, I found the day I spent there to be deeply moving, profoundly so, actually. I would go back in a heartbeat, and fully intend to. Next time, I plan on spending several days taking in the exhibits, and even that won’t be enough for the attention it deserves.

ernandez R -> RE: Museo del Prado flamenco (Oct. 1 2020 4:27:16)

Wow,
I actually found it quite moving, the mixing of Spanish historical culture, and bending, against a backdrop of masters, and a masked finale!

Bravo!

HR

“gender bending” maybe. Spanish culture=a dude in a bata de cola losing a fight with his Mantón. [:D]

Morante -> RE: Museo del Prado flamenco (Oct. 1 2020 15:34:07)

I wonder why nobody found this video to be an insulto to flamenco: baile really is for maricónes? Has anybody ever seen El Guito, Mario Maya, Farruco padre? I know several of these people and me da verguenza. Edu ya no me habla!

When flamenco was declared Patrimonio de la Humanidad, this left it in the hands of the politicos and the result you see[:@]

Mr. T -> RE: Museo del Prado flamenco (Oct. 1 2020 16:15:28)

Wow, am I really reading this.

Flamenco no es para todo?

Perhaps you don't need the most authentic flamenco setting for the promotion of your culture?

The video does move me as a potential tourist.

Enjoy life!

Fair Use Mofo!

ernandez R -> RE: Museo del Prado flamenco (Oct. 2 2020 4:32:46)

Ricardo,

Sadly I'm not that familure with Spanish dance culture or the language. I just thought it was all cool. Was around many in the queer community in my youth so I'm no stranger or offended, you might say I raised an eyebrow slightly but that's all.

Me and the Boss both agreed the gentalmen in green playing the castanets rocked it. I found the shorter lady working her heals rapidly to be intriguing but the Goya in the background might have created a... um, contextual contrast?

I'm glad for the "Flamenco police" as it were to keep us all honest but at the same time I look forward to the new and unexpected. This is why I bother to watch the video posts here where as a rule I would not.

Well, I thought my responses were clear enough. [:D]. Anyway, the famous Joaquin Cortes many years ago obviously influenced these people, and he is not even maricon as every female member of his company was required to sleep with him before getting in (this I heard from someone seriously considering joining but had to decline[:D]). For sure the shirtless guy, the dude in the dress, and the man-bun in the leather skirt are all either paying direct tribute to Naomi Campbell’s ex boyfriend OR they are ripping him off badly. More likely the later as the tribute thing is quite cheesy.

To other folks that don’t know about Joaquin etc, well, for a long time now flamenco dancers have been pushing the envelope of artistic expression on the dance stage with QUESTIONABLE TASTE due to perhaps boredom with the traditional genre? If you watch the first flamenco movie of Saura, Cortes had the arrogance and audacity to dance with no shirt on when his fellow artists were the likes of (as morante mentioned) heavy weights such as Mario Maya and Farruco! Now at a superficial level that was perhaps artisictically bold or whatever in context for Joaquin to do that, plus with his string ensemble, however, it can also be seen as insulting to the ancient art form and it’s greatest artists in history. Note that the OTHER Joaquin, (Grilo), danced with exceptional taste and skill despite being considered “modern” by comparison.

Since then many dancers have taken the fact the guy “got away with it” on stage to be a green light to all kind of wacky stuff (Rocio Molina strip tease alegrias, or tossing menstrual blood on stage etc), to the point where the video morante has posted is practically “normalized” and now the music world being forced to swallow lady Gaga esque “Rosalias” and what not as representative of “flamenco”.

Once again it is about taste, not about one’s sexual orientation.

Morante -> RE: Museo del Prado flamenco (Oct. 2 2020 18:16:50)

I am inclined to think that they are more influenced by the excentricities of Israel Galván than by the chulería of Joaquín Cortés[:D]

My flamenco focus started with guitar and progressed to cante. I have never known much about dance. Of course when we go to Spain, the flamenco shows are all about baile--except for Jose Luis Postigo's place in Sevilla. His show is about equal parts guitar, cante and dance.

The dialogue between cantaor and tocaor is for me one of the great pleasures of cante: Manuel Morao with Terremoto (padre) and La Perla de Cadiz, Paco Cepero and Aurora Vargas, Diego del Gastor and Fernanda de Utrera, Périco el del Lunar (padre y hijo) with Rafael Romero "El Gallina", Paco with Fosforito and Camaron.....

So anyhow, I looked up Joaquin Cortes on Youtube. Wow. Talk about the dancer as" Major Star" and Big Boss!

Filip -> RE: Museo del Prado flamenco (Oct. 3 2020 8:41:50)

I was never into baile, and there was only one time that I was watching it (live or video) and was left amazed. It was at Tomatito's concert in Madrid in 2014. There was a girl dancer whose name is Paloma, wow.

Richard Jernigan -> RE: Museo del Prado flamenco (Oct. 3 2020 15:43:54)

I saw Paloma Fantova when Tomatito was here in Austin a while back. She was magnificent. I was reminded of Carmen Amaya. She only did two pieces, one near the beginning of the show, one near the end. I thought they might have limited her for fear she would steal the whole show.

We saw her at the Tablao Cordobes in Barcelona last September. She started the show with a solea that was riveting. All the rest of the show was loud and fast, typical tourist fare, but well done by a number of performers. Paloma Fantova stood out as the best.

Huh? That guy has his shirt on 😂!

Seriously Galvan is making more like a cubist Picasso out of flamenco, not stomping around in a dress like cortes did 2 decades ago. Further I notice direct movements from his performance in Saura’s flamenco flamenco “silencio”, so he is actually thinking about being artistic, even if I don’t like it. I can’t compare it directly to other garbage I’ve seen which is pretending to be artistic in order to get away with just being “different” because they are mediocre at the traditional thing.

singlechange -> RE: Museo del Prado flamenco (Oct. 4 2020 3:00:19)

Thanks for pointing me to the Joaquin Cortes on Youtube.
