JasonM -> Conde Documentary (Sep. 6 2020 3:58:22)

Now on the Tube with subtitles en Ingles. More like a film for the sake of film ,than a solid documentary. But I always like seeing these guys.

Mamma Maria!

I do, too. They are good people.

I like how they bookended the documentary with excerpts from Leonard Cohen’s Prince of Asturias Award acceptance speech.

great, thanks. will check this out asap!

I watched! great stuff.

I really like those wooden spool clamps they use. They are big boys for building guitars instead of the little violin ones.

Ricardo -> RE: Conde Documentary (Sep. 8 2020 16:14:42)

That was a fantastic science fiction! I could see those actors father son daughter “guitar builders” winning the Oscar!

JasonM -> RE: Conde Documentary (Sep. 8 2020 17:29:50)

Spoiler Alert!!

Rumor is that the actor who plays Filipe Sr did not pay his Guild dues during the pandemic. So they had to write him out of the script in the upcoming sequel. In his place, Evil Uncle Mariano shows up to the shop unannounced that he will be taking over the helm from here on out. The kids can keep there jobs but despise having to brand “M.C” on the soundboards of all their Handmade guitars and will plot revenge. Instead, they try and slip one past ol’ Tio M and they buy factory guitars from Valencia and claim they made them. Will Evil Uncle be fooled by the kids, or will he know exactly where these guitars were made?

Should be interesting!

is this fun? And what this promo video proves?
Btw it wasn’t you saying Mariano didn’t build guitars in his shop of Calle Amnistia and his guitars were quite poor? Come on.
You are a great player and a very nice guy, no need to be provocative.

This documentary starts as if it were a movie. Screenplay by: Jorge Guerrero

Btw, wtf is doing Leonard Cohen in this documentary? He played flamenco? From what I know he's the guy who wrote Hallelulujah.

You should watch this documentary. 40% of the documentary shows luthier Manuel Diaz from Granada. Make sure to turn on subtitles and let youtube translate it into english. They are 100% correct.

Why would he have to play flamenco to be included in the documentary? He’s there because they were honoured by his words. He was a great poet.

The Conde’s all know how to make guitars, BTW, and their shops are real functioning workplaces. The fathers probably know more about flamenco guitar making than most of the makers on this Foro. They aren’t actors standing in front of Potemkin Villages. Doesn’t even make sense to think that.

Thanks for the video. I wonder which 6 chords Mr. Cohen is talking about.
Probably all the major and minor chords except for diminished one for example Bdim in C major. Any ideas?

No doubt the Conde know their stuff and Felipe know also how to run his business.
The disagreement with Ricardo regards a topic (the outsourcing in a certain span of time) discussed in a different 3D.
The best of luck to Felipe, Mariano and Atocha.

This is the Lutherie section, where we fight about guitar making. The proper place to fight over the stuff you’re asking about is in the General section. All other fights or miscellaneous haphazard brawling should be directed to the Off-Topic section.

Echi -> RE: Conde Documentary (Sep. 9 2020 15:28:07)

The promo mentions Leonard Cohen to stress the role of the brand in guitar history and the continuity between the shop of Calle Gravina and the new generations of Conde.

Ramirez did the same thing with George Harrison (they also sold a George Harrison tribute) as the guitarist bought a Ramirez studio model back in the sixties.
Of course everybody associates Ramirez to Segovia (or Sabicas) and Conde to Paco but people of the caliber of Cohen have an impact outside the circle of flamenco lovers.

The guitar of Cohen should be a second class Conde made of cypress of the times of Faustino.

Mr. Cohen mentions his guitar had a cedar top. Not sure if it was a flamenco guitar.

Thank you JasonM for posting this video. I really enjoyed it.

Ricardo -> RE: Conde Documentary (Sep. 10 2020 13:48:39)

On Facebook felipe conde was apologizing for advertising some documentary about paco de lucia that aired yesterday that apparently was embarrassingly bad. Did anybody catch it in Spain? Trying to figure out why it was so bad everybody is making fun of it.

Edit: found on YouTube all ready....
Right off that bat they say he lives between two wives lol

I guess this aired then there was a discussion panel about it, and that’s what everybody thought was a joke, because only farru was associated with Paco on the panel.

Persistent claims that they don’t know how to build guitars at all and have been contracting valencia and other black operations at area 54 where Bigfoot and aliens apparently build the instruments for them and ship them back to madrid so they can stick their labels in and pretend they actually built them....since The time Faustino died and therefore must be involving their children in the decades long conspiracy.

Well, being serious it’s not like that at all.
Frankly I (and others) have always said that the guitars coming out from the shop Calle Felipe V and recently from the shops of Felipe and Mariano are quality guitars hand made by individual luthiers.
Many people have just considered not realistic that 2 guys could make all the guitars made in their best years (really a lot) without the help of someone else.
2 persons just cannot build 200 quality guitars per year.
Among the many options, frankly the idea that they could have commissioned some guitars to well trained guitar makers based in Madrid is not offensive.

Regarding Felipe I’m saying that he now leads a big company in the same way as Amalia Ramirez or Pablo Contreras (RIP) do, which is quite different from the work a self employed luthier.
To be clear, I'm not envious at all of the fortune of Felipe: he deserves it.
I just stand with some difficulty fake marketing stuff.

Um if he doesn’t make the guitar he says he does, then, NO HE FKING DOESN’T!!! And if the marketing is fake...it is called FKING FRAUD!!!! He should be in jail. But nobody has a damn shred of true evidence WHAT SO EVER!!!!! [:D][:D][:D]

Look I am no fan boy....I just want to understand how those kids can pretend to build a guitar if they are not capable, just like dad. It is hilarious to me. I am totally ready to accept it once the evidence is in my hands.

Yeah it wasn’t the actually documentary that is making everybody upset...it seems it was this discussion panel (exception being Farru):

Sorry but it just doesn't work like that in Spain.
For years people told the story that their Ramirez would have been personally made by the hands of the old José just to discover later that this wasn't the case.
Nonetheless Ramirez are great guitars and José the man behind them.

Manuel Contreras was among the best luthiers ever born.
His son Pablo took the company after his death and did great: he also won the Rodrigo Prize in Madrid (over the guitars of Conde, Bernabé and Ramirez to give an idea) with his 10th anniversary model.
Unfortunately he has been ill for many years and just later on it was made clear that Pablo Contreras didn't make directly any guitar: he designed them and led a group of luthiers to work under his specs.

I could go ahead with the stories of Hernandez y Aguado, Gerundino etc. but it looks like it's not worth the effort in the case of the Conde. Too much love and hatred.
I mean: if even when one of the two brothers (Mariano Conde) decided to say how the things went, and he was treated in this foro as a layer, it means no evidence would be ever accepted here.
I'll just stop debating on that.

JasonM -> RE: Conde Documentary (Sep. 12 2020 15:17:36)

I would bet my Sanchis that the kids, Felipe and Maria, are building their guitars. Even if they later outsourced, having first hand knowledge would valuable.

Also, I get the impression that demand for Condes is less these days than what it used to be. OR they are doing less volume/higher prices.... agree disagree?

Echi -> RE: Conde Documentary (Sep. 12 2020 16:44:12)

They do it. They are followed by a more experienced luthier working full time in the shop.
I guess Maria build less than his brother as she is also studying.

For sure the demand is weaker than the time of Calle Felipe V but still strong. Felipe Jr. is well into the local flamenco world.

About other named makers...well they always admitted to it. It was no secret. Some builders stamp their initials in the guitar and that even matters to collectors. Gonzales connection etc was known to Gerundino etc. I am ready for the evidence and still can’t understand how they are the only people that kept such a secret unlike other builders [:D]. We are not talking about sick decrepit old men or widows. But I love how the story keeps changing. Now it’s “one more experienced luthier that works full time” helping them in the shop [:D]. I wish I had a dollar for every variant of the Conde story that exists.
