Has anyone taken any decent shots in a theatre?? I am going to see Paco Pena and am 10 rows from the front. I have a digital SLR, 24 -120 lens and intend to turn off the flash and shoot wide open at 1600 ASA..........I think that will work. Any other suggestions would be welcome

i'm jealous of you seeing paco! where is he playing?

at 1600 you will get tons of grain in the shadows but you should be fine unless you're planning on printing large or doing a lot of tweaks afterwards. paco should be lit fairly brightly though i'm sure his hands will be moving fast. if you get under 1/60 of a sec, balance your elbows on your knees or the chair in front of you for stability.

also if your camera has a spot or center-weight meter, that'll help with the exposure of a brightly lit performer in a dark hall.

oh and lots of things have changed as far as photography during performances, especially with the advent of high-end consumer cameras being available in recent years. be prepared to walk back to the car if they find your camera.

Gary why bother? You can get video and stills afterwards, and many for free. All the shots I have seen that are snitched within the theatre have been crap. The light contrasts are simply too great. But whatever enjoy the meastro. I will see him in late april and am really looking forward to it. If your going earlier do post a review.

I am seeing him in Cambridge at the Corn Exchange on 14/3/06.. bargain ticket price at £22.00. Photography is a hobby of mine although I have never taken this type of shot. Nigel .....does Paco have videos out of each of his shows??

I will see how it goes with regards to the photography obviously I don't wish to be ejected in disgrace[:D]. If I get any decent shots I will post them.

I will post a review and will try to get a programme to detail who was with him.

I think there are plenty of tickets left, its only 50 minutes from London on the 17.45 train.

Double identity huh. Bet you lead an interesting life.

I hunted down some sample videos before I booked for London April 25th. There were certainly some samples on the Sadlers Wells site. I will have another look when I get home (in Scotland at the mo)

I still have a £35 ticket, front row of circle, if anyone is interested. Unfortunately the love of my life will be in Madrid on family duty - thus the spare ticket. Buy me a pint before hand and it is yours (someone must like paco?????? [:D])

Hi Rice are you based in the UK? the reason I ask is that I am unaware of bans on cameras and have never been searched at a provincial theatre (yet). I can understand the flash photography thing being intensely annoying so would have no doubt that a flash would immediately get the artists attention and that of the icecream usherette.

hey gary, no i'm in hyper camera aware Los Angeles. and while i've never been kicked out of a performance i have been told at the door that there is no photography allowed during the show once my gear is spotted. i always respond that there is no way i am leaving thousands of dollars in camera gear in the car and they usually let me in.

i guess it depends on the venue and country. and glad to hear that the UK is more relaxed about it. i saw a play at the kennedy center in DC last year and while we weren't searched, the women did have to open up their purses.

the last few orchestral and dance performances i've seen in LA, they announce as the lights dim to turn your phones off and that photography is forbidden. most rock music clubs won't let you in with pro gear without a pass but then the entire place is filled with people taking snaps on their picture phones.

maybe if you time the shot with a golpe, no one will hear it. i'm very jealous of the fact that you are seeing paco pena and the fact that you can shoot him too.

To answer you question, I have several times and they were pretty much what I expected not bad at all. In my case it wasn't anyone as well known and it was a small venue. I was lucky I could move around and re-frame, no seating see. What do you want to achieve with your shots? Some portraits of our hero in action? In that case you are better of taking the advice of buying the posters etc. at the show. Us paying punters are never usually in the best position for shots. Blag your way in the pro photoraphers pit, there at least you will get close enough to the great man. ps you will need a longer lens, bracket every shot. All the best and Good luck.
