granjuanillo -> Paco del Gastor (Jul. 29 2020 3:49:43)

I just read Ramón Soler Díaz's biography of Paco del Gastor (Paco del Gastor: de otra cuerda, Almuzara) - really Paco's own oral history. It was a great window into Morón, but also the emerging modern guitar scene of the 60s and 70s. Lots of references to fiestas and recordings. Soler Díaz created a treasure trove of recordings on YouTube:

These include a rare solo record of Paco's from the 70s (some with orchestra, some with Juan del Gastor), fiestas with Fernanda and Bernarda, and with Manolito de la Maria, Paco de Valdepeñas, and others in Los Gabrieles in 1964, when Donn Pohren ran a basement fiesta. Old timers like me will remember Gabrieles on Calle Echegueray, with amazing tile work - alas, no longer exists. In the early 20th century it competed with Villa Rosa (Plaza Santa Ana, also with great tile work), as the center of the Madrid flamenco scene. Villa Rosa has managed to hang on, while Gabrieles limped along through he 70s and 80s and finally ended.

Anyway lots of great stuff that I have only begun to listen to.

One interesting thing - in his solo album, he attributes the guajira to Mario Escudero (mid-labeled as Maria Escudero on the record cover). However, it is clearly Paco de Lucía's guajira. I looked at several Escudero recordings to see if the Paco guajiras was actually his - no - Escudero's recorded a few guajirass - all in the Sabicas mold.
