Hi! I will build a flamenco guitar and I am about to make spool clamps but don't know the ideal length. I cut this prototype rod 15 cm long but it is like too much. I tried it on my crappy classical guitar and the result is in the pics. What is the ideal length for them? (I left an extra part for the thickness of the solera which i don't have yet. Also I don't have any idea about the thickness of solera. It would be great if you also suggest ideas about it)

I would go a little longer, say to 200mm. I have some commercially made cello clamps and they have 150mm clamping distance (between jaws). This allows you a bit of wiggle room, there’s no advantage to running out of space. Might want to glue some cork to the jaws, too, if you have any available.

i have 5 x 1 meter rods, and I wanted to use them as short as possible to have 20-25 pieces of spool clamps. Because I want to make G clamps as well. So I don't want to cut them longer than enough. I planned 8.5~ cm of body thickness, the circle shaped wood pieces are 1cm~ wide, the nuts are like 1.5 cm~ so total is 12 cm ... So the last thing is the thickness of the solera. So what is the normal thickness of a solera?

Solera thicknesses can vary and 85mm is on the thin side for the dimensions. For example, a typical Santos style might be 94mm at the end block and 88mm at the heel. Not to say there aren’t thin guitars out there, but do you really want to be locked into this?

I think trying to maximize the number of clamps you can get out of the rods you have available is a false economy. You could potentially be putting yourself in the position where you make a pile of clamps that offer limited usage or no practical use, at all. Why not just buy another rod or two or settle for less clamps? If you size them properly you won’t have to worry about the solera thickness as much, as it won’t be tied to the need to work with undersized clamps. I’d beef up the depth of the dowels, too. And add some cork.

As far as solera goes, there’s no one answer save that you want it to be stable. Two 3/4” (18mm) sheets of hardboard or plywood glued together to give ~1.5” total would do the trick.

Best,

Thank you so much for the answers!
