GailP -> Flamenco DVD Lessons for Beginner (Feb. 23 2006 21:14:27)

I am looking to buy a DVD that would help me play flamenco. I am a beginner. Can anyone recommend any DVD's I could purchase to get me started? Thanks.[sm=Smiley Guitar.gif]

I would start with Gerhard Graf-Martinez's Vol 1. I noticed there are a few on ebay for sale.

Well, it sort of depends. Are you just starting to learn guitar? Or, are have you been playing guitar for a while and are just starting flamenco guitar?

If its the latter then as Samwise says G-M's vol 1 or Juan Martin's Step by Step vol 1 are both good. I have both and like different things about each. In addition, some folks here like Oscar Herrero's books, but I have no experience with them. I think all three of these authors books come with DVD and/or CD's

If its the former then that's a whole different ballgame. IMO I don't think you could just jump into either G-M's or Juan Martin's books without some basic guitar training and understanding. If that's the case I would recommend Scott Tennant's "Pumping Nylon" and Christopher Parkening's "Guitar method, Vol 1 & 2 as a place to start. They should keep you "engaged" for quite some time, depending upon how much you practice.

Of course the best thing is to find a flamenco guitar teacher. However, they a few and far between depending upon where you live.
