Hiya,

So I saw this video of the amazing tanbur player Pouriya Raisi

In the introduction (while he's still muting the strings) he repeats a pretty serious right-hand "roll" a couple of times. It has something of the feel of the "abanico" (triplet roll), but I've watched it a few times now (at half speed) and I'm pretty sure it's a four beat rhythm (16th notes, maybe?). So my question is - does anyone know this technique?

It looks like he might either be going:

down with the ring finger, down with the index, up with the index and then up with the ring

or:

down with the index, up with the index, up with the ring, up with the pinky

From the video it's kinda hard to tell. If anyone has any ideas I'd be keen to know your thoughts!

Cheers :)

Theo

ps if you like this track check out his song "Bi Zamani". It's also just great.

The beginning one is i down i up a up a down, i-i-a-a, etc.

The one at 1:41 is a septuplet i d i u i d i u m-a-e, i-i-i-i-m-a-e, etc. Not sure it’s even 7 or if there is a gap at the reset to make 8 note rhythm...because one time he gets ami down at once in the 8th count space as one sound or a triplet flam. It’s quite foreign for what we do in flamenco. Up stroke with i is bad enough that we don’t need it going on with other fingers exclusively. It works for his skinny neck instrument of course.

Nice hypnotic stuff. Would have been better with a cobra coming out of a pot [;)] Well that is what it reminded me of.

I preferred the track here to Bi Zamani as it created more of an atmosphere but probably just me. Anyway thanks Theo. Enjoyed it.

But I think I'll skip the i d i u i d i u m-a-e, i-i-i-i-m-a-e and focus on my ami [:D]

Thanks Ricardo!

Nice to see that I wasn't too far off :)

Cheers,

Theo
