Which technique is most often used? (Full Version)

I wonder which technique is most often used in flamenco overall? It would be interesting to know how many seconds or minutes a certain technique is played overall, for example in 5 minute flamenco music. Maybe you can be more precise and give an estimate for each palo. A ranking for each technique would be cool.

What I thought was arpeggio or alzapua would top the list. I haven't expected rasgueado there. But who am I to judge. That's why I'll leave it to those who have been in flamenco for many years.

As for the left hand, that's the thing one has to consider. Indeed, left hand fingers are active all the time. Left arm flexor muscles must be strong for that. In rasgueado, the opposite is true. I watched on youtube Pepe Romero saying that rasgueado is the technique that uses the extensor muscles extensively.

Edit: In alzapua, thumb upstrokes use extensor muscles as well.

Your question wasn’t specific of what you meant regarding “5 minute Flamenco music”.... is that accompanying or solo? For example the most often played rhythm for BAILE will be Bulerias, lots of rasgueados, hours and hours worth. But if I’m playing say, a solo like Guajiras de lucia, well that thing has zero rasgueado.

Since I'm into accompaniying, I would say 5 minute cante. But it looks like it's hard to tell which technique except picado which is rarely used during accompaniment.

post a video from youtube and ask what the technique is from a specific time frame, otherwise it's mostly rasgueado of some kind for the cante, and whatever technique for falsetas - could be any of the techniques, including picado - who says it's rarely used?

Another reason one has to avoid accompanying baile. It will not do anynone good except for meeting other guitarists and learning from them or just watching them. In rasgueado, we use muscles we've never used before. It can lead to injuries very easily.

You are a novice and need to learn to take advice rather than dish it out. Although Pohren made a similar ignorant statement in his book, no doubt because he injured himself using bad technique.

Solea will use a high percentage of arpegio, but the other two can be done 100% rasgueado with no other technique needed. Solea por medio can also be done only rasgueado.

Here is solea cante accompaniment...except for a few brief arpegio passages from 7-10, and a single compas of pulgar/index, it’s all rasgueado:

From what I see, the ranking would be Rasgueado Index Pulgar Arpeggio. Is it me or does this solea sound a bit faster than usual? On which beat do you start at 0:28?

Regardless of what finger strums a chord, any direction, it’s part of “rasgueado”. It’s fast as it ever was in the old days. I am keeping muted rhythm constant at the start... when I stop muting its beat 10.

where do you get these garbage ideas from?!

if you want to get good at compas and rasgueado, go sit in dance class. most flamenco guitarists have spent at least some time accompanying baile.

EDIT: sorry, bad day, ill-tempered comment withdrawn here...

When a guitarist accompanies they won't use picado while the singer is singing, but when a guitarist chooses a falseta they can do what they like. Watch Pedro Peña or Pedro Bacan accompany cante on the Rito y Geografia films. EDIT: also Ramon Montoya, Miguel Borrull, Sabicas accompanying cante....

I have been asked to play specific picado falsetas for dance accompaniment during escobillas.
