After carving a neck, I wiped it down with naptha (mineral spirits, paint thinner) to help me see if more sanding was needed. I let it dry, did a little more sanding, completed the guitar, and finished with French polish. After the customer had it for a month or so, he called to say that the finish on the neck was bubbling up. Apparently some higher-boiling component of the naptha had remained in the pores of the cedro, only to try to rise through the finish later. I paid for the shipping both ways so the customer could send the guitar back to me for refinishing the neck. Better to wipe with water or alcohol, which also raises the grain, before final sanding.
