Can someone help explain to me why folks are going out and buying so much toilet paper? I had read initially that the raw material from toilet paper can be used to make masks which I figured would drive folks to buy toilet paper because masks are in shortage. I would never think of buying more toilet paper. I as a middle-easterner have always used a bidet, and that obviates the need for toilet paper entirely. Most people just use a towel designated for ass-wiping, and if it gets soiled, you wash it and reuse it.

I think it's because people don't want to go to the store anymore than they have to. My son in law just bought a bidet. I went to a costco yesterday and they had no toiliet paper or clorox wipes. I think it is because if they have to self-isolate themselves they won't be able to go out to get more for a week or two, but the reaction of emptying the shop in panic seems totally out of proportion. I started using bidet’s in the last decade because I’ve been visiting the EU more often. I’m still not sure if I’m using them correctly, but if I ever remodel my bathroom I’m going to put one in. They just seem cleaner, and you definitely feel cleaner, too, when in the habit of using one. Maybe they’ll catch on here in NA at some point. I hope so. Not only does their use seem to be more hygienic, but the use of less toilet paper also saves trees. The shelves are empty here, too. TP and all liquid hand washing products are gone. The streets are also very quiet. I think the gravity of the situation is sinking in. But I also think that might be a good thing, as I believe social distancing is going to make a big difference in how this will play out, and that’s only going to occur after people get a little scared. After the hoarders are done with the first waves of panic buying then the shelves will hopefully return to normal. If they don’t, I expect there will be some form of rationing legislation or measures brought into play.

Knowing many here are distributed across the globe I wondered if others had seen a reaction similar to what I'm seeing in Spain. We heard yesterday that in Madrid some supermarkets were stopping home delivery. And today near Cadiz we have just had our normal home delivery, we expected today, annulled. Obviously home delivery is the best way of controlling the spread of the virus. There is no need for any physical contact between supermarkets employees and customers. And a simple software change will stop bulk buying. And importantly people who are in voluntary isolation will not need to break the rules to avoid starvation. However now people will be forced to visit the supermarkets which will lead to lots of close contact.

Weird. That doesn't seem to make much sense. I'll have to call my neighbors and see if they need somebody to go grocery shopping for them. I'm sure you heard from your relatives that here in Madrid they're closing up pretty much everything that caters to the public, except essentials. Officially "estancos" are essential, but last night the line around the local estanco went a good 50m outside of the shop. I'll be doing my own shopping early tomorrow morning. There's a Carrefour Market not too far that is open 24/7 so I can just switch my morning jog for grocery shopping. Even with all this, I doubt there'll be hardly anyone there at 6am. Most of the people I know would rather die from covid than to have to be up and about that early [8D]. Though that probably won't be an option if they put up a curfew. Anyway, you definitely made the right call Goldwinghai!! @Escribano You doing alright over there in Italy? @the professional guitarists on here: if ever any of you are in a rut because of concert cancellations or whatever, PM me and, within what I can afford, I'll be happy to pay for a Skype lesson or two, or whatever option you have that can help you get some cash. I may not be able to actually take the lesson right away (my own work schedule hasn't abated at all) but I don't mind paying in advance and then just getting the lesson whenever.

I had thought of that. My prof told me yesterday that his 2 jobs, an institute in Jerez and another in El Puerto, had been terminated for 2 weeks. And then who knows. We discussed skype but he had little confidence in the value. But now we are playing duets maybe we could do some recording. Not sure how it would work but I'd give it a go. Any thoughts on anything other than skype that is worth a go? I'd use BigBlueButton that I use for giving english lessons but to get it to record would mean I'd need to buy a license and that's not cheap. And normally he cannot do Mondays and Tuesdays but now he is free all the time - it is an ill wind [:D]

Because the sheeple understand that ransacking a store with hundreds of people and standing in long lines is the ultimate way to spread the viruses that they have, (we all have viruses all the time spreading em), so that they can hurry Home to infect their loved ones while they enjoy watching entire world business and economy collapse from home tv as they enjoy getting sick. Lovely times. My mom went to school with kids that had polio [:D]

Marta and I have been spending a month in Arizona, and we are experiencing this crisis in Tempe, but it would be the same if we were home in Washington, DC. There is no need to buy tons of toilet paper, just as there is no need to stock up on cases and cases of bottled water. If everyone just bought a little more than usual, the shelves would remain stocked and everyone would be able to get what is needed. What I find particularly disgusting are those who check out of the supermarket with five to ten times what they need, leaving the shelves bare. That means that some people will be unable to get any because of the greedy actions of hoarders who have no thought for anyone else and their needs. It is all in line with our President, who hasn't a clue as to how to handle this health crisis. He and his team were caught with their pants down regarding setting up testing protocols for the Coronavirus. He spouts off about "everyone" being tested who needs it, yet we are not ready to test "everyone" who needs it. This disgusting display of hoarding is in line with the President's ignorance and the prevailing attitude that "it is all about me." Bill

I went to Kroger yesterday to buy some stuff, but they were out of several things: bananas, oatmeal, bread, meat, toilet paper of course. What struck me though is that on the drive there (and that was close to midnight), I noticed that people were not "as nice" as they usually are on the road in Nashville. People here usually wait quite a bit at stop signs to make sure it is clear who is to go first. They take their time starting/stopping at traffic lights. Last night, though, people were very aggressive with their driving, which is giving me the sense there is a bit of an "anarchy" mentality developing. I'm much more curious to see how humanity / society will behave / respond in the face of this (in terms of it being a global stressful crisis, without focusing on the fact that it is a viral illness that can be fatal) rather than on the health outcomes themselves.

After a bit of investigation it seems that this is down to extreme incompetence. Tried another Carrefour order. It added things to the basket but 5 mins or so later the items changed status one by one to unavailable. They sort of melted away [:D] Tried Mercadona who just annulled the order. Now tried Hipercor (El Corte Ingles) who are currently saying ok. We wait and see. Anyway I've got a few tabs of falsetas printed at the local shop so am all set for a lock in.
