Hey Guys

Just wanted to ask a question. When you are storing your guitars and don't pay them often...lets say twice a week. Do you guys "Unwind" the strings? or is it ok to leave the guitar winded and tuned? is this bad for the instrument to keep in stored for long periods of time with strings winded and tuned?

I know there are some makers who recommend you detune their guitars when not in use, I believe one of them is Masaki Sakurai though I could be wrong. Personally I don't believe you should have to do that though, and I think leaving the string tension on allows the guitar to "warm up" faster when you start playing it.

i will go further, if you don't play as mush the guitar and in your town , or at your house, you have a temperature changing al the time thats a good thing to do.

I only detune my guitars wen I travel with them, and yes probably nothing happens but I do it.

Ok this is good to know, I usually detune the guitar when i am not going to play it for long periods of time...like months. I figured it puts too much tension on the top of guitar ad bridge.

I play a number of guitars; after use when I wipe down a guitar and strings I always quickly detune down one half or a whole note on each string. I hope this will over the long haul help prevent any action changes due to temperature or humidity. My storage area is monitored for both.

I have never slackened the strings on my guitars except for air travel (don’t know why I do this) – perhaps I am foolish. I have one guitar that has been under continuous tension for more than 50 years with no apparent problems. I guess that Paco’s stage guitar was under continuous tension for nearly 40 years.

If I had a serious crack in a guitar I would detune it.
