Playing super fast evenly spaced picado, clean executed arpeggio or tremolo would sound nice and definitely attract many people. But only for the first few seconds or minutes. After that the surprise effect will fade out soon. Mr. Wooten also mentioned it. This makes the audience be quite and listen to it. That's all.
Playing simple stuff with feeling is more than that. It'll make most, if not all, people sitting in the audience want to listen to it longer. And the next day they want to listen to it again and again. A hook of a song has the same effect.

As for BB King, David Russell said in his interview that Segovia had the ability to play that one important note of a phrase and make the whole phrase sound magical. This is also what BB King was doing all the time. I think it's about articulation, dynamics, timing and rhythm. For that one doesn't need a high level technique. It's all about feeling.
From what I know is there is less connection between a world class technique and creativity. At least, as far as writing a hit song is concerned. Composition can be different.

Speak for yourself only please. I feel exactly the opposite depending On Specific case. I can be super bored or frustrated to the point of anger if an exceptional artist is deliberately holding back for the sake of the crappy song or whatever. Life is too short to not use the tools of expression with taste. Again taste is tied to knowledge of what’s going on. Both simple and extremely complex can be deep and beautiful. I refuse to prescribe to “less is more” nonsense. This issue of “feeling” is entirely subjective. Everybody has feeling and nobody is required to feel someone else’s same feeling just because they express some cliche music vibe. Life is way bigger than that.

Mr Wooten is being encouraging to students with limited ability. Compare this to BB king and there is the clear hypocrisy of what he was saying.

Yeah simple enough when you only have 4 strings [;)]

Saw him play with Clapton at the Albert Hall. As an encore they just jammed (if 'just' is a word you can use when talking about BB and God). It was just mesmerizing. But I wouldn't say when they ran up and down the frets that it was played without magic. For sure the technique was there but it didn't lack anything.

Disagree. One does need high level technique for that.

JasonM -> RE: 2020 Releases (Mar. 29 2020 22:17:25)

Funny, I always thought BB King was pretty boring for that exact reason. Same 5 notes in the same position on the neck. As a listener I’m anticipating something to happen but it never comes.

Gerardo was a genius composer not just a technical player. His album Jucal is a masterpiece. When I first heard it I didn’t even understand it from a flamenco perspective. I was just starting to play. But it didn’t even matter that it was Nuevo trashmenco... still amazing!

What Mr. Wooten is doing there is another way of expressing himself and has every right to be appreciated although I think a virtuoso technique should not become an end in itself.

Ever heard of half and double time feeling? Yes, for articulation you need a certain level of technique. BB King has a nice vibrato technique producing lots of emotions.

Also requires technique. Feeling vs technique is a false dichotomy IMHO.

No false dichotomy there. Both are 2 different things. Players with a good technique can have a terrible sense of rhythm and vica versa. To me, rhythm is the most underestimated element in western music. Blame white music industry.

RobF -> RE: 2020 Releases (Mar. 30 2020 15:56:53)

Alright, alright, who derailed the frikken’ thread???

I can see it started on Page 1, but since all the Usual Suspects are hanging out here on Page 2 I’m not even gonna go back and look to see who the Culprit is...you’re all guilty!

Now, go to your rooms, and don’t come out until you’ve got the mandolin part on this down PAT!

alright, alright. I'll behave. ^^
(though I gotta say: after 2 weeks' confinement, that "I'm already in my room" resonates with me a lot more than it should for a grown man! ^^)

JasonM -> RE: 2020 Releases (Mar. 30 2020 16:21:21)

Since we are talking about mandolin now...

RobF -> RE: 2020 Releases (Mar. 30 2020 17:13:43)

Sheesh...I give up....[:(]

You could buy quite a few Reyes with what that Loar would cost you, and throw in a couple of top Condes, a Gerundino, and a Barba, too.

If they can’t control the rhythm it’s because they don’t have the technique for it. Ability to play a fast scale or whatever is not equivalent to “good” technique.

Guadiana “Por Dos Vereas Iguales”.

Features Carlos de Jacoba on guitar, Piraña on cajón, and Los Mellis on palmas. Straightforward and unadorned. It’s on iTunes, so probably on the other streaming services, too.

José del Tomate with Camaron on cante. I guess his dad has let him go digging through the archives...

Not sure when his album is due out, but clearly there’s been work getting done.

nikgogl -> RE: 2020 Releases (May 5 2020 21:44:34)

Looks like Pepe Fernandez might have an album coming soon?

mrstwinkle -> RE: 2020 Releases (May 22 2020 14:52:33)

Antonio Rey Flamenco sin fronteras is now available on Spotify, probably other platforms too.

Daniel Casares Guitarrisimo due 30 July.

mrstwinkle -> RE: 2020 Releases (Jul. 13 2020 12:50:25)

New single. Israel Fernandez with Diego del Morao. El Anhelo (buleria).

I just bought it on Amazon as mp3 album, I stumbled upon "El Anhelo" and "Seguiriyas del Desvelo" on YouTube before and couldn't help myself but to get the whole album.

Anyone already heard it (the album)? I'm just having my first listen!

Diego del Moaro's new album with Antonio Reyes (Que suene el cante) can also be found on YouTube, gonna give it a listen later.. Diego is being really crafty, me gusta.[sm=Smiley Guitar.gif]

RobF -> RE: 2020 Releases (Nov. 20 2020 21:57:13)

I think Dani de Morón released this album in October. Creer para Ver.

This just out...Pepe de Lucia...Un Nuevo Universo
One of my pet peeves is how in this day of no liner notes it’s near impossible to get information on who actually plays on some of these releases. I’ll update if I can find the info.

RobF -> RE: 2020 Releases (Dec. 9 2020 16:53:02)

Dedicated to Manuel de Falla and about half the tracks are based on de Falla compositions. Rocío Márquez and Enrike Solinís - Omnia Vincit Amor.
Not really flamenco, or even guitar-centric...oh well...something different, then.
