An example. This morning I played 3 classical exercises (Study in C , Study in G, and Stillness [lives up to its name]). About 70 4/4 bars in all. My wife (a sevillana) said she loved it. However, when I play flamenco she does show her dislike [:'(].

At first I thought it was my playing, but she never listens or shows any interest in flamenco at any time or place. If we walk by a bar with someone playing flamenco I feel her grip on my arm tighten. Quite the reverse for classical. We walked passed a guy playing cello in Cadiz yesterday and she stopped to listen.

So, for fear of losing my audience I’m thinking of playing more of what my prof in Jerez calls guiri flamenco. I have a load of materials that are, I’d say, Spanish folk flamenco. Less rasqueos, more melody. “It’s Solea Jim, but not as we know it”.

Just wondered if anyone else had been dragged off course by their family likes? Or maybe so that they could play with friends who are into a different genre. Or do you just push on until the heathens get converted? [:D]

Find something else she hates more. My wife can’t abide Villa Lobos. So any expressions of antiflamenquismo are met with sustained playing of Chôros No. 1 until order is restored.

Tangos seem to be the only thing I play which are appreciated. Suspect it is the 4 beat thing, as my tangos suck.

My (Mexican) wife hates flamenco. I have to practise far away [:D]

My wife is a Flamenco dancer pro. I put on flamenco like hard core old school stuff, she is like “please spare me I have a headache”. I can get her to listen to some soft vicente amigo or Antonio Rey, but only the soft slow songs. Unfortunately guys this is a case of opposites attract. Don’t waste anytime trying to convert these women. If you do happen upon your female counter part that loves all the same music you like and movies and other things....be WARNED....it’s a trap! Get out of there!!!!!!!

Well thanks for the replies guys. For sure makes me feel less alone [:)]

Brendan I can see how that strategy might work but I can't think of something that she'd hate and I'd enjoy.

So for the moment I'll try more of the spanish folkie stuff with classical exercises, but not play it with my gitano in Jerez [8D] At least it is helping with my left fret hand accuracy.

Yep, first date with my wife of over thirty years we went to tower records and both bought PdL records.....I've taken her to see Paco, Vicente, Tomatito, and local's. I've stopped taking her-it isn't her thing. She has come to some of my more memorable gigs and supported my efforts over the years. But these days I'd rather go alone to any kind of flamenco thing.

She tolerates my practicing, which is generous because I don't usually bother to go downstairs to where I have a complete studio, I hang in the living room and play the same passages about ten thousand times......her tolerance is pretty reasonable from my perspective.

Wow, great advice if you want to get your car keyed, stabbed tires, dead bunny in the pot, or end up in jail. [:D]

But I married a Sevillana. I think I should be able to make a claim under consumer rights.

To be fair she likes Clapton, Dylan, S&G, The Stones, ..... so I shouldn't complain too loudly. (Although I can only play a little Dylan of those [:D])

I have not yet met a person that hated Flamenco more than certain Spaniards. I mean they can really despise the stuff.
