Good afternoon,

Does anyone know if the luthier from California Glenn D Canin is still building guitars?

I have tried his old web address http://www.glenncaninguitars.com with no success.

Thanks James

Yes he is. He's been building a lot of classicals these days it seems as I've noticed many more of those than anything flamenco coming from his shop new. He's on facebook and like most probably using that as his primary vs website if it's gone.

The last I heard from Glen was that he was remodeling homes, with guitar building on the side, for additional economy. Smart move, as I have had a day job with guitar building on the side for most of my building career.

Glen bought some rosettes from me years ago. Nice guy.....

And if Glen is building classical guitars now, then he's is just being smart with the market trend since there is significant reduction in flamenco sales at this time.

This is one reason I build flamencos with rosewood backs and sides, as the action can always be adjusted to fit any style and the tap plate can always be referred to as a tonal plate, which can actually protect a classical top.

The trick here is to be sure that both styles can be built with proper string tension for classical and flamenco.

Good morning Tom,

I would fully agree with you that the world is undergoing a major shift economically, with
global debt at unsustainable levels, which ultimately will not end well.

Of course this lowers the demand for all high end hand crafted instruments and others as well...the world is over producing and demand falling.

I want to thank you for your updated information on Glenn and also wanted to say that I know you are a very respected world class luthier.

Be well

James

James,

Thank you for the kind word but I'm not a luthier, only a guitar maker. A luthier is one who builds many different instruments of various kinds; like RE Brune, etc.

And yes, the world is changing with its over abundance of musical instrument production. And where it ends, no one knows.

But I would like to think that instrument quality will be higher in the foreseeable future.

It's the voice that compels us.

Talking to Glenn several months ago, he stated that the market for his classical guitars was strong. He has raised his prices, but they are still guitars of great value, and he has a long waiting list. Interestingly, he now charges as much for a flamenco as he does for a classical. Demand for his guitars is so good that he does not bother to maintain a website.

Do you know how he makes his balsa double top nowadays?
I saw an early model of his, made basically with 2 plates (spruce and balsa) glued together. Good and loud.
The fashion nowadays is for a 3 layers double top: spruce, a core made of balsa stripes placed at 45 degrees and a closing plate made of cedar or spruce.
Just curious to know if he kept his original way or he updated his method.

Etta,

Would it be possible for you to call Glenn and ask him to dialog a little with us on this thread? I would be interested on how he has progressed in his building practice, as well as some of the techniques he is using.

Give Glenn my regards.
