Merle -> I need to be examined...therapy! (Oct. 13 2003 22:38:20)

Hey, guys and gals! I need help, BAD!

I have been working on a zambra by Juan Serrano, and I just cannot get that melody out of my HEAD! It is so beautiful! Serrano explains that a zambra is a song and dance in the old days that the Moors in Spain were calling it.

Does anyone have more history of zambra? How many of you guys and gals play zambra? Can anyone give me some info about a CD(s) that I could listen to a zambra from other artists? Does anyone have any material (books, tab) that has a zambra, that maybe I could get?

I'll tell you what, I cannot get that melody out of my head! I have it in my head during the day, and it's probably the last thing in my head when I go to sleep!

I'm getting the notes down, and it's rather long, so that is where I have been spending my time. I've been trying to practice solea for Pat, but, I just cannot get away from learning this palo! (and I will)!!

It is SOO beautiful! I need to see a doctor, and have him tell me what is wrong with me!! ;>)

If you have Jaun Serrano's "Flamenco Concert Selections", listen to it, and I will see you at the doctors office!

Really, I don't think I have ever come across a flamenco palo that has me so mesmerized as this, I just don't know why! Any thoughts, suggestions, ...

I cannot get over how beautiful the melody sounds...

I know that I'm just a beginner, however, I know that I have never heard a palo that sticks with me so much!

But, I'm playing it better and better everyday...and I WILL learn this zambra!!

(where is Todd when I need him)!! ;>)

Merle

Well, the initial post of mine, (zambra), well, guess what? After I posted, I looked through some of my CD's and found a zambra by the master! So, I answred my own question! SUP WIT that?

The CD "GRANDES FIGURES DU FLAMENCO", Volume 14,..by Sabicas! Song 11...!

Please listen to that zambra, if you have that CD...again...?

Ok, I'm done! (dammit), that is SWEET! To SWEET! ;>)

Merle;

From the book “Queen of the Gypsies” by Paco Sevilla, there is reference to the Zambra.

Juan Amaya created the first Zambra, in the Sacromonte of Granada, The word refers to “fiesta”. This was during the 19th century. Then we have “El Chino”, father of Carmen Amaya, playing a Zambra in Maria de La O (1936), and Sabicas relationship with the Amaya family. Sabicas played Zambra in at least 5 different keys, about 10-15 years later.

By the way I enjoy playing this flamenco form, and Katy sings while I play.

I also read that it comes from Granada. The Sacromonte (I guess "sacred mount") is above Plaza Neuva and rises on the other side of the River Darra(?) from the Alhambra. I think. Kate lives up there.

gerundino63 -> RE: I need to be examined...therapy! (Oct. 15 2003 19:24:59)

Your welcome, Merle!

The Zambra is on the old cd, 'flamenco' philips 826 904-2
It is also in a different execution on the cd, ''Fabulous flamenco' eclipse 820 692-2
botn from Paco Pena.
It is very prevereble ( is that proper ennglish?) to have the music, becouse it is played very freely.
If you can not find the cd, or the music, I can send you a copy.
you can see my email, 8 posts above.
greetings, Peter.

Phil -> RE: I need to be examined...therapy! (Oct. 16 2003 0:43:43)

I have a question.

You don't hear Zambra much nowadays. Palos seem to go in and out of style. I don't have any examples of a Zambra with cante, but 2 or 3 years ago I heard Diego Agujetas singing and I asked his cousin, who's also a cantaor and was standing next to me, if he was singing a Tientos and he said no, it's a Zambra. So my question is: Is the compas and chord structure of a Zambra (with cante) similar to a Tientos? I'm guessing that it must be if I mistook it for a Tientos. Like most guitarists, I usually identify a palo by what the guitar is playing, although I'm starting to pay more attention to the melody of the cante.

Thanks,
Phil

I just picked up this thread looking for Moruna tabs - has anyone got that tab (or another for it I suppose) in PTB, GP4, or the like? (haha i.e., something with MIDI) thanks!

Jim Opfer -> RE: I need to be examined...therapy! (May 15 2007 21:10:36)

Listen here

tk -> RE: I need to be examined...therapy! (May 15 2007 23:42:25)

Actually that's not it Jim. That youtube video is the "Arabian Dance" played by Sabicas and arranged by Paco Pena.

I have the actual song of that Zambra that Peter transcribed but I don't know how to upload. Any help and I will post it.

Thanks,

TK

Nooooo worries [;)]

Adam -> RE: I need to be examined...therapy! (May 19 2007 6:01:46)

So I can't QUITE tell, but it sounds like Paco plays this with capo on the 1st fret (and there's a circled "1" on top of the page of the transcription) - is that right?
