hello im buying my first falmenco guitar should i get a blanca or negra
thanks

devilhand -> RE: blanca or negra (Nov. 3 2019 10:48:24)

It depends. I would buy both blanca and negra. That's why I didn't vote. Both have a different sound. Back and sides of negra are built by indian or brazilian rosewood. Blancas have cypress back and sides.

If you want a guitar with deeper and round sound plus with long sustain, then go for negra. Blancas are considered as traditional flamenco guitars. Blancas have brighter/sharper sound and short sustain. So it's up to you. I read that negras are more appropriate to be played in bigger rooms or halls. It's more like a classical/concert guitar.

mrstwinkle -> RE: blanca or negra (Nov. 3 2019 11:04:46)

If you're unsure I'd say go for a blanca.

Filip -> RE: blanca or negra (Nov. 3 2019 13:28:15)

I would suggest to do two things: listen to a lot of different blancas and negras (youtube or in person playing if you have the opportunity), and also try to play a lot of different guitars until you see for yourself how they relate to your taste. In my view nothing is more relevant than trying for yourself.

My first flamenco guitar was blanca. I always wanted a negra too and just recently I fulfilled that wish about which I will write soon here.

*looks at watch* Piwin, it’s only noon. And you’re in your cups already???

My thoughts on the poll...if you get a Negra you’ll always wonder if you should have gotten a Blanca. But if you get a Blanca you like, you might not care to go any further. I would vote for a Blanca first.

jeromeimad -> RE: blanca or negra (Nov. 3 2019 14:50:39)

Get the opposite of whatever your girlfriend is.

[:D] It's never too early for Michael Jackson references!

@Ricardo What color does my girlfriend have to be if I want to get an orange Conde?[8D]

[&:] I remember that from school art lessons [:D] Complimentary colours and all that stuff. Maybe if you kept her in the fridge you'd get close.

I'm 100% certain that if I tried to put her in the fridge, she'd look like this: [:@]. Not that I'd actually see her. I'd be too busy writhing in pain from a swift kick to the balls. We need a more elaborate scheme for [&:]. Halloween is already behind us so it's too late for the "let's dress up as smurfs" trick. Hm. Maybe something involving a fake invitation to join the Blue Man Group?

devilhand -> RE: blanca or negra (Nov. 3 2019 16:25:59)

Blanca and negra comparison applies mostly to hair color.
Orange is kinda blonde. So you should go for a brunette girl.

Ok, so you actually already bought a guitar, nice, congratulations.

About whether or not you made the right choice, I think that you are the only person who can tell that, and I am sure you will do just fine. I really think that different guitars suit differently to different people, so what might be a perfect guitar for me might really be not that great guitar for you. So my humble suggestion is that you forget about "did I make the right choice" question, and instead that you play and enjoy your new guitar, that you learn as much as you can and improve your skills by playing it (also it would be nice to hear some of your recordings). As you make progress along the way, as you learn more about guitars, as you listen and hopefully play a lot of them during the following years, you will eventually form your taste and confidence about guitars and you will either keep this blanca or acquire a new instrument that you will absolutely love.
Nevertheless, it would be interesting to hear what others would think about this idea.

As a side comment, I was not familiar with Amalio Burguet guitars so I took a look at the web page, looks nice. One thing that strikes me though is that it says that all guitars are hand made which given some guitar prices seems almost impossible to me, I am really surprised if this is the case.

Cheers

tri7/5 -> RE: blanca or negra (Nov. 3 2019 21:19:22)

The goal is just to get something to play here. Play and enjoy firstly, don't worry about semantics or specific woods/sound/construction so much on the onset. If the guitar works for you as far as feel, action, pulsation then you are good to go. It's your first guitar so don't worry so much about it. Just play.

Now you're stretching. [8D] (said the ginger trying to not be lumped together with blondes [8D])

On the rest I agree with Filip. I'd imagine most people start out with a blanca, but in the end it's just up to each individual player and what suits them (which may change over time). Enjoy your new guitar!

timk -> RE: blanca or negra (Nov. 4 2019 23:49:40)

I prefer the sound of a blanca but fell into a great deal for a Kremona negra. It is a "B" grade that has odd tidbits to the finish and a slight lump in the rosette. It sounds fantastic to my ear though! I also had to buy online without being able to test guitars beyond the garbage at guitarcenter, a couple hours away. It is my personality to hem and haw over choices like this too, especially when paying a large chunk of money. I am happy with my purchase but am also looking to build a blanca when time allows.

Congratulations on the lovely looking guitar. Has it arrived? How does it feel?

I'm up for trading at any point [;)][;)]

devilhand -> RE: blanca or negra (Apr. 30 2021 22:15:16)

Here we go again. A neverending discussion about <negra or blanca>. Do both guitars have the typical sound of negra and blanca respectively? Which one would you choose and why?

At 2:17 cedar top negra vs spruce/pine? top blanca

etta -> RE: blanca or negra (May 1 2021 18:23:10)

I have a negra that sounds like a blanca, and a blanca that sounds like a negra. Both guitars are fine intruments. But the negra/blanca comparisons do not always hold up. Usually the body depth of the negra is greater; often the depth of the blanca is deeper on the bass end and less on the treble end to give a more immediate punch to the sound. The nature of the woods, regardless of top woods, used on the backs and sides can change the tone, volume, and dynamics of a guitar, but not as much as you might think. There are general assumptions about characteristics of negras and blancas, but as previously mentioned, each guitar must be evaluated on its own. And importantly, each hand built guitar will nearly always reflect something of the skill and goals of the luthier for his/her guitars in play-ability and sound. And don't forget strings; they can alter guitar sounds and responses.

agujetas -> RE: blanca or negra (May 1 2021 18:38:52)

I agree with the previous post. I prefer blancas but my favourite guitar is a negra. It’s the individual guitar that matters and they are all unique so generalisations will only get you so far.

Ricardo -> RE: blanca or negra (May 2 2021 17:32:53)

Negras grew on me over the years. My best guitar is a conde negra. But my favorite guitar remains a blanca.

Filip -> RE: blanca or negra (May 3 2021 16:04:27)

My first guitar was a blanca, but currently I play a negra.
I really like a negra that Jesus Guerrero plays, I saw him live in Ronda a couple of years ago. It was Mariano Conde cedar/Indian rosewood negra, great sound, loved it.

Cheers
