Auda -> Vertical lines (Oct. 28 2019 15:15:34)

Can anybody tell me what these vertical lines between the bar lines mean?

Cheers

Do the same thing (the same chord) with the same note durations as just before that in the same bar. Weird - what effort are they saving; we are not in the era of manual type-setting anymore; and there is plenty of white space, so avoiding clutter isn't it either. Looks especially odd on the tab staff.

Not really sure what this means Konstantin, can you restate that?

The music is from a book of Faucher transcriptions.

You just repeat what is written in the first half of the bar. In music, this is called abbreviations. Never seen vertical lines such as this before for notating abbreviations. Abbreviations are notated differently in music. What you have there is some ****ty sheet music. Don't use them.

Piwin -> RE: Vertical lines (Oct. 28 2019 16:15:46)

If you go back to your thread on Xs, you'll see in the screenshot I posted that they use the same bar symbol there, quite a lot in fact. It means that you play the same chord as whatever came immediately before it. I think if there's no rhythmic notation attached to it, then it's like kitarist was saying and it's the same duration as whatever came before (in this case, an 8th note). If there is rhythmic notation attached to it, then you play the same chord as before but in whatever new rhythm is written down.

BTW: jesus you're just gobbling down Sabicas pieces aren't you?!! [:D]

Yes, this is what I meant. It's a ditto mark.

Auda -> RE: Vertical lines (Oct. 28 2019 17:16:53)

Thanks Konstantin and Piwin.

Still not completely clear as the progression of chords are repeated 4 times not each chord played 3 times before going to the next chord. I'll have study of the pasted music in the X's thread. Maybe it will become clear but I can be a bit thick at times.

Yeah Piwin I have been on a Sabicas kick for a little while now which has led me to join this forum. Besides this piece I'm also working on Damascos which isn't too difficult though the Soleras by Sabicas I am also working on is going to take a bit of time.

Cheers

The music is from a purchased Alain Faucher published transcription who has a highly regarded reputation so I think I will still use it and am likely to purchase more.

See here between 1:44 - 1:50

What you play is each chord twice (because of the ditto marks), and then the whole sequence like this because of the repeat signs and the [1. 2.][3.] indicators:

3 3 5 5 7 7 0 0 3 3 5 5 7 7 0 0 3 3 5 5 7 7 8 8 7 (7)

where (each number represent the chord in that position, except (7) which is the single note E at the very end):

3 3 5 5 7 7 0 0 is the first sequence, which you are told to then repeat, so

3 3 5 5 7 7 0 0 is the second sequence, and then you are told to start repeating again, except this time [3.] the last chord is at position 8 instead of position 0, so you play

3 3 5 5 7 7 8 8 as the third sequence ( the 8 8 are the chords with the ornamentation)

and then the 7 (7) is how I marked the chord in position 7 that follows and the single E note in position 7 (as (7)).

In fact now that I listened carefully to the clip, the bit in position 0 should be 0 (0), not 0 0, as it is the 000 chord and a single D (0), not two 000 chords.

deleted because Konstantin is just too darn fast [8D]

Yeah- I am such an idiot sometimes! For some reason after memorising the piece, playing it and listening to it many times I started playing the chords singly instead of doubled up.

Faucher’s invented many things with his scores you simply need to get used to. In This case he is stuck between classical guitar world and jazz chart slash notation world.

Thanks for letting me know as I am likely soon placing an order.
