Ricardo -> Performing Frevo in Spain (Jul. 24 2019 16:07:49)

After a 5 year hiatus I returned to Sanlucar for classes with Gerardo Nunez. The highlight for me was being reunited by my good Friend Christophe Bersier, now residing in Zurich, and finally performing live this famous Paco and Mclaughlin duet at the Peña Flamenca “Puerto Lucero”. Sure I know it’s not flamenco puro, but I don’t get any other opportunities to perform this specific music. Enjoy!

Great playing from both of you guys! Nice picado runs Ricardo. I really like this piece by Gismonti.

This is great! The only thing I regret is it cutting out the audience reaction at the end!

Great Ricardo! Loved it!

Why do you love this one so much? [:D]

My favorite Jesse Cook composition! This is amazing playing and great Solos. You make it look effortless! I’ve watched it quite a few times already. Keeping me inspired to keep at this piece.

Konstatine, did you record this?

Ramz, He never gets to play this number because no one can keep up with him.

Jason, what are you smoking [:D]

JasonM -> RE: Performing Frevo in Spain (Jul. 25 2019 19:47:46)

[:D] Nothing unfortunately. My brain left out the “it” in your sentence. So I thought maybe you were there too. I don’t know what’s wrong with me because I did the same thing again this morning. I read “York, PA” as New York which caused confusion. Maybe it’s all the alcohol from French ploshing LoL.

[:D] But what about the Jesse Cook composition comment? Or was that one a joke?

JasonM -> RE: Performing Frevo in Spain (Jul. 26 2019 0:12:53)

Oh right. Yes that’s just my dry sense of humor because even though Frevo is not “flamenco puro” as Ricardo puts it, its at the opposite end of sophistication level compared to Cook.

I don’t know, it sounds cool, one of my first exposure to Paco de Lucia, modulation via improvisation between one, two, and four flats, and I rarely or never get to perform it with a partner.

Speaking of 'Frevo', have you guys seen this arrangement by Brazilian guitarist Ulisses Rocha? It seems to be following closely (e.g. harmonies) the original Frevo, the piano version on Gismonti's 'Solo'. Compared to McLaughlin/PdL's version, this one also has the second/improv section following closely the original:

Damn, the guy plays both parts at once! [:D][8D]

Yep I had seen that before. Knowing the piece very well it’s really a cool solo version, I like. If I had heard this as the only definitive version of the piece when I was 17, I probably would not have cared at all about it, and perhaps never gotten into flamenco. [:D]

He is not really playing both parts at once, ie like the Assad’s who have one guy doing the right hand and the other doing the left hand of the piano solo. Rather his is simply doing arpeggios of the implied harmony. Very cool idea.

JasonM -> RE: Performing Frevo in Spain (Nov. 27 2019 15:38:22)

I like how he harmonizes the Gm acending scale section of the main melody. It’s a little different than other arrangements. Guitar trio still my favorite.
