I just came back from a four-week guitar vacation in Seville. It was my fourth trip to Seville so I am somewhat ‘tired’ of the place with most tourist attractions visited multiple times. The guitar lessons were excellent however. I had plenty of materials to work on and videos to review in the next several months. In addition to daily lessons with Antonio Gamez at Taller Flamenco, who was always very patient and helpful, I also had several lessons with independent teachers, learning Tango with Jose de Pura, Seguiriyas with Socrates Mastrodimos, whom I met at a pena. Besides learning the technical aspects of Flamenco, Socrates advised me to play with “attitude” whereas Antonio telling me to put more feeling in my piece to make the dancer want get up and dance. They could see the results of my solo playing in the ‘bedroom’ for too long. Great advice! One thing special about Socrates was that he taught lessons with actual music notation, which I really like. I now start thinking about my next guitar vacation and want to visit a different flamenco city. Any suggestions and recommendations are appreciated.

Cádiz or Granada. Cádiz may be more of a challenge (probably one-to-one lessons) and Granada is not exactly heaving with flamenco, but has some schools.

With the train it's really easy to travel from Seville and other cities, the prices are a bit high though. So you can stay in one city and explore by train, bus or car the nearby cities and see where you like best.

On Cadiz I’d suggest a base of EL Puerto or Jerez.

Just a thought in passing. There is a flamenco dance school next door to my prof’s house in Jerez. Just 300 meters opposite a road leads to my Argentinian luthier, Esteban Eijo. To get to his workshop you pass through a patio where they give flamenco guitar instruction. Turn right from my prof’s house and within 500 meters there is a shop with links to flamenco guitar lessons. Another few hundred meters is an institute of music. It's just a small suburb northwest of the station. It really is flamenco land.

As an example, if you used El Puerto as a base, you can cross the bay by boat to Cadiz (20 mins/a few Euros). From there by boat to Rota (30 mins and a few Euros more). Or take a train from El Puerto to Cadiz is 25 mins (6.80 Es return). But the fourth stop is San Fernando where there is an active flamenco community. Jerez from El Puerto by train is 13 mins/ 4 Euros return. El Puerto to Sanlucar is not so easy as buses are few and far between. But they run reliably and are dirt cheap. Sevilla is 75 mins by train and costs 13.60 Euros one way.

And if you’re flying in don’t forget Jerez airport. Not many flights but much easier at the Spanish end than Sevilla.

But I guess you should also consider Huelva in this part of the world. I only know Antonio Davao there and that Anders based himself there in his latter Spanish years.

Thank you Escribano, Tele and Nigel for your input. From Seville as a base, I have taken weekend or day trips to Cádiz, Puerto de Santa Maria, Granada, Cordoba, Malaga, Ronda and Jerez, mainly for sightseeing with the wife, I did not look into flamenco schools at these places. Flamenco guitar lesson is still priority. I want to be able to register with a school and take additional lessons with independent teachers if available. I can’t depend on only independent teachers in making my travel plans because they may have their priority changes and have to cancel class. It already happened to me with two teachers. I prefer one-on-one lessons but may try one week of group lesson.
Nigel: do you have the names and contact info of the places that give lessons near the luthier and your professor’s house?

Not really. I offered the info just to give an idea of the quantity of Flamenco in the area.

At your level I think best I leave specific recommendations to others. For sure in Huelva Antonio Dovao would be worth contacting (You could mention the foro and Anders if you email him. He gave Anders lessons. Really nice guy.).

On Jerez I'll have a chat with my guy. Although he is my prof he also takes lessons so he knows someone who must be at the top end. I'll see him after Semana Santa.

You could email Esteban Eijo also. He has supplied guitars to some top guys. And I enjoyed visiting his workshop. Was like going back a century in a time machine - but I guess most luthier workshops are like that [:)].
