Fred Klinge -> USA Import Duty (Mar. 27 2019 20:30:37)

Hey folks,

I have a new guitar arriving soon from Spain, made by Evan Kingma who has been recently working as an apprentice in the Stephen Hill workshop.

I happened upon a Foro thread from 2017 that leads me to believe I might have to pay an 8.7% Import Duty that calculated on the cost value of the guitar, shipping costs, and insurance. That thread also stated it's a hit-or-miss kind of situation...sometimes no duty is assessed and it seems to be random.

Just wanting to know if anyone has imported a guitar recently and if the US Import Duty is still 8.7% (online searches have been futile...).

I want to prepared come delivery day, which should be next week, fingers crossed. Thanks in advance for any duty info!

I found it here:

Duty on imports of musical instruments (i.e., keyboard, piano, string, guitar, wind, percussion, drums, etc.) which says:

"Duty is assessed based on the price paid (converted to dollars) for the instrument. Duty rates for musical instruments can be obtained in Chapter 92 of the Harmonized Tariff Schedule."

They link to Chapter 92 which states:

So it is still 8.7% of the price in USD.

Thanks so much, Konstantin! I'll be all set to go if the important duty happens....
