Based on a ongoing thread about Reyes’ market valuations, I was wondering who you think are those luthiers whose guitars might become very sought after in the years to come. Vincente is - I think - playing a Graciliano Perez, for example. Recently I discovered Josè Villalba, who makes real cannons and in limited quantities. Who you think is the next Reyes and why?

Aw, shucks [:)] I have a long way to go, but probably at least 40 years to do it so who knows?

Well, there are many very good makers around but such a great fame for a maker specialised in flamenco guitars is something rare. It’s a small group formed by people like Santos, Domingo Esteso, Barbero, Arcangel, Faustino Conde, Gerundino and Reyes.
Like it or not it’s fair enough to add Ramirez III to the group.
In my opinion they are all very good makers but their guitars are not necessarily the best ones. We all know that this market is strongly conditioned by the pro-players as the world of flamenco in Spain works like that.
The fame of Reyes is strongly due to Vicente and Tomatito and the price is pushed up by the dealers.
My guess for the next Reyes (in terms of market range, I mean) is Barba, then probably someone among Marvi or Plazuelo.

isn't barba already considered a "legend" along with antonio marin and manuel bellido? it seems jeronimo perez is gaining a lot of popularity. other than the already mentioned I believe lester devoe's guitars are very pricey already, he might also be a good candidate for the next "reyes". There are a lot of great and underappreciated guitar makers though (in this regard, with all respect they are much appreciated by all of us[:)]), unfortunately. people like andy, anders, ethan, stephen, deserve to be big global players imo with the monster guitars they make. or even the guy that made my guitar is making beasts. unfortunately, the big tocaores set the trends.

Barba has always been a little more expensive than others (few years ago he used to ask 5500 euro per guitar) but his guitars have always been in the same league with those of Marin Montero, Plazuelo, Manzanero, Manuel Caceres, Jose’ Romero, Bernabè, Marvi, Manuel and Jose’ Bellido.
The recent demand for guitars in the high range of the market pushed his name (and prices up) up.
I for one, compared a Barba with a Pedro Muriel and found better the latter. Great consideration for Barba but the difference in price doesn’t mean necessarily a better guitar.

of course not, that's why I put "legend" in quotation marks. it's the market demand that sets the price in the end and not how good a guitar is.

IMO, asking this question is no different than asking who will be the next Paco or the next Vicente. Once you can answer that, then look at who made the guitar they’re playing. There’s your next Reyes.

sartorius -> RE: Who are the next Reyes? (Jan. 10 2019 12:50:22)

Personally I like Javier Mejías guitars, especially in Antonio Rey's hands..

or the next Vicente.

Antonio Rey [:D]

But there will be no "next paco"

Andy - But he is really the next Gerundino

tk -> RE: Who are the next Reyes? (Jan. 22 2019 21:05:44)

The maker who can achieve to make a guitar on which both flamenco and classical guitar pieces sound good.

This could be the next Reyes right here. Maybe not at the pace I’m working though

is there a gap between your endblock and soundboard?

JasonM -> RE: Who are the next Reyes? (Jan. 25 2019 20:27:38)

Looks like it from the picture but the end block is beveled so that it contacts the top with a similar surface area as the peones next to it. I got this from Pablo Requena.

benros -> RE: Who are the next Reyes? (Jan. 25 2019 23:11:17)

ah okay, i see... interesting idea. ;) thanks for clarifying!

benros -> RE: Who are the next Reyes? (Jan. 25 2019 23:14:13)

p.s: but why then not thinning the endblock down to the depth of the peones?

Your asking the wrong guy[:D] But, I think you want some thickness here to reinforce the sides so that you don’t bump the lower bout and get a crack. The main reason I beveled the end was so that it wouldn’t interfere with my dome as much. I could have not chamfered it and profiled it to match the top too.

I had a hell of a time getting my sides flush with the heel. I cut my slots ok but I think I accidentally hit the inside of the slots with a file when cutting the ledge for the top. You can see the two gaps I have where the shims go in. I was paying close attention to getting the sides flush when I drove them in and not to how they were going in. Lessons learned!

Have you started stripping your top?
