Fred Klinge -> Gotoh KG-01-CA tuners (Oct. 22 2018 10:14:17)

Wondering if any foro members have experience with this set of tuners. They certainly don't have a traditional flamenco aesthetic, but they do weigh in at 110g. I purchased a new Salvador Castillo blanca which I absolutely love, but the lyre Schaller tuners are awful - sticky and inconsistent and they don't seem to be improving with time as the guitar breaks in. I owned a classical guitar with Schallers in the past that worked beautifully, but not this set. Anyway....let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

Whoa those are kind of cool looking. Are you trying to save a few grams for the race lol? Someone gave me a set of Schallers with ebony knobs and I took them apart. They use a lot of little shims including transparent little plastic plates - way over complicated compared to Gotoh. I also thought the gold plating was an overly tacky gold color. Looks cheap.

Echi -> RE: Gotoh KG-01-CA tuners (Oct. 22 2018 15:30:13)

They are lovely. I have been seriously thinking of buying them a couple of months ago from the auction site.
In my case I ended up buying something else because I wasn’t too much convinced by the price ratio.

Escribano -> RE: Gotoh KG-01-CA tuners (Oct. 22 2018 18:30:02)

I installed some ebony knob Schallers (lyre I think, without checking) many years ago and they have been great. I wonder if they changed the design?

Thanks for the feedback everyone...and as I mentioned Escribano, I had a pair of Hauser-style Schallers on a classical guitar that worked perfectly. I'm thinking that some of tuner holes might not be in perfect alignment, or perhaps they need to be re-sanded. I love, love, love this guitar, but perhaps some of the final finish work was rushed a bit.

I'm all about function and I do like the CF look of the Gotoh KG-CA's. They're a bit pricey and I'm tempted to order a set of Schellers with a lyre brushed brass plate. I've owned two sets on previous guitars and they're fantastic, but again, much more expensive.

Leñador -> RE: Gotoh KG-01-CA tuners (Oct. 23 2018 1:05:41)

They look cool, but then I picture em on the guitar and it looks out of place. Like an Eames chair in a Spanish Revival house....

Well stated, Len, and I agree with you. I think I might splurge and order a set of Schellers with lyre brushed brass base plates. Ole!

Keep in Mind, "Scheller" gears are a whole different thing from "Schaller" production.
-

Also helpful to consider that no small number of guitar heads (of all kinds of guitars, including some fine specimen) have lop-sided drilled roller holes.

Such will skew perspective on mechanics functionality. What may turn relatively fine freely might become stuck and erratic after having been mounted onto a guitar. Most helpful with overcoming slanted wholes and levering on rollers appear to be rollers with bearing ends.

Ruphus, you make a really good point. Perhaps I should select a set of tuners with roller bearings.

I kind of like the look of the Gotohs, something different for a change. Only found one source selling them online. And I read on the Delcamp forum that Scheller doesn’t sell retail anymore?

Fred, tell us more about this new Castillo. Any pics or sound bites?

Echi -> RE: Gotoh KG-01-CA tuners (Oct. 23 2018 16:35:19)

Well, I don’t agree that a flamenco guitar must necessarily look old style: I mean, it depends from your actual guitar and to your tastes: I wouldn’t put modern Gotoh on a Santos guitar but I don’t see anything wrong in having them on a Castillo, a Conde a Ramirez etc.
The Fustero design is always right but something different sometimes adds something more...

Jason, I was able to purchase a set of Scheller tuners earlier this year, but I did buy them from a luthier who was selling a set online. Back in 2013 I was able to purchase a set directly from Scheller, but it sounds like that might not be option now. I went to the Scheller website yesterday, filled out the configuration order form and the end I did have to indicate if I was a company, luthier, or individual person. At least there's still an "individual person" option on the order sheet. We'll have to see if I hear back. No hurries and I might decide on the Gotohs, or as Ruphus suggested, I might want to consider ordering tuners with end bearings in case there's a hole alignment issue.

I ordered the Castillo this past July, a few weeks before the big brouhaha regarding a Castillo delivery here on the foro. I purchased mine through Beau Bledsoe, who runs the Castillo website for Salvador. Anyway...basic order - spruce top, Mexican Cypress, 660/53. The good news for me is the guitar arrived in excellent shape, no finish issues from traveling in the heat, excellent set-up and intonation. I'm new to the flamenco guitar scene, but I've been privileged to own some really nice steel string and classical guitars for the past 20 years. The Castillo is amazing - it can roar like lion when pushed, but it sounds beautiful and balanced during quiet passages. Very easy to play on both hands and that's a big thing for me. I'll turn 60 next summer and ease-of-play is an important criteria for my aging hands. I've played it every day for the past 10 weeks and it's a joy each and every time. My Castillo story is a happy one. My only niggle are the tuners, but that's a very minor concern.

I'll do my best to get a recording up in the next few weeks - may have to use my iPhone, but I'll give it a shot. I'll definitely post some photos.

My Flamenco instructor is a formally trained classical guitarist (from Bulgaria, earned a degree in music performance at Southeast Louisiana University). He played the brand new Castillo for about five minutes, looked up, smiled, and told me it was finest guitar he's played. I actually sold him my Navarro Reyes, which he loves. He's a man of few words and he is astounded with the Castillo.

Big giant thumbs-up for my Castillo Blanca!

Caution about guitars on beds or sofas might be based on similar empirics like with that leaning of guitars against walls. All kind of restings that can easily lead to serious regrets. (Me recalls someone describing how an acquaintance of his dropped himself on a bed under whichs cover there used to sleep a kitten. An even worse scene to imagine. The thought made me refrain from any throwing myself on a bed since.) And we had that story here on the foro about a flamenco artist dizzy seating himself on a stellar guitar -which he had just received and adored- on the back seat of his car. According to the teller it was irreparable.

The hat thingy, so I read, ought to stem from times before and during world wars, when people were concerned about spreading of lice. (Something [lice in kindergartens] that started reoccurring in central Europe since about 30 years or so now. -Cockroaches, bedbugs and moths appear to be seeing a comeback too, while tropic mosquitoes and other [crop, tree and aqua] pests appear to explore by global trade, shipping, travel, migration and climate change as well. )
Even California, flourishing with exemplary farming due to absence of pests, appears to be gradually caught up. Just mentioning.

Regarding drilled holes -provided accurate spacing- I assume putting in some protruding kind of sticks like pencils might help evaluating visually whether tuners might be affected.

Fred, congrats to your special guitar!

How did you experience your Schellers?

JasonM -> RE: Gotoh KG-01-CA tuners (Oct. 24 2018 13:19:42)

Fred that’s awesome. Glad to hear you got a great guitar. Never played a Castillo and there aren’t too many videos of his guitars on YouTube. But I’ve read good things about him on the foro ( except for that last incident).

constructordeguitarras -> RE: Gotoh KG-01-CA tuners (Oct. 25 2018 20:02:41)

I have used other Gotohs which I think were functionally the same and worked well. These do look nice. I think the performance of Schallers depends on the accuracy of the installation (holes).

I think you're right Ethan - it seems like the third string post hole is a bit off. As Ruphus recommended above, for a replacement set, make sure they have roller end bearings. I do believe the Gotoh KG-01 tuners have roller end bearings...

A couple of quick iPhone 8 vids, courtesy of my flamenco instructor. Poor guy had just walked in out of the cold when I handed him the guitar.

Btw, I ended up putting a set of Alessi F5 tuners on the guitar.

Nice guitar! Sounds old school

I'm new to the world of flamenco guitars, but I've read several descriptions of Castillo blancas having a similar tone as older Ramirez blancas. The guitar does have amazing volume...it will roar when pushed!
