Whoa I’m confused. So this is fake news or she only built one guitar for her dad and the rest come from Valencia? They used to come from Valencia until they split up and now they actually make guitars that coincidentally sound like the old condes from Valencia.... or, they ACTUALLY make guitars?????[8|]

Maybe Valencia is outsourcing. On the video she's basically assembling parts.

Valencia provides the kits and Madrid puts the labour and glues the brand. [:D]

I prefer the term Alternative Facts to Fake News. Notice what looks like a Stephen Faulk label in the background in the video. Might that explain why he’s covering his tracks by trash talking Conde. Eh? Eh?

Notice how Maria says they choose from one of three “patterns” for the top. This would cover why you might find different bracing patterns.

Finally notice in the pic at the bottom of the article there’s a stack of sound hole punch outs. It looks like a lot but not enough to cover all the Condes on eBay.

Well, none of the bracing pattern shown in the video (very well made, btw ) is the one commonly used by Felipe for the A26 - A27 model. The last pattern is the typical one used by Esteso (I saw it also in a ‘49 Sobrinos) and probably in this case will go to a re-edicion model.

Let’s speak of a general trend in Spain (it’s not something specific of the Conde):
In Madrid and a Valencia there are many good guitar makers you can hire and pay per guitar: You give them plantilla, plan, wood (with pre-worked neck) and (pre-made) rosette and in 20 days you get back the raw guitar, ready for varnishing.
There are people specialised also in working guitar parts; for instance the Tezanos for the necks etc..
How easy is to outsource? Some people thought it’s better to lead a company and become rich with some marketing rather than pass the day handling a chisel. Is that simple.
At this stage Felipe Conde should have just an employee (David Adizes) minding the shop and customer service.
Given the above, what matters the most is the average quality of the final product.

Yeah, I noticed that too, the stick had some give to it when the chisel sliced in, almost like it was damp. When I saw it in the vid I just assumed she was cleaning up the end. The chisel had to have been very sharp.

I’ve been in their shop, they have a Tormek sharpening system but Filipe Jr. said he tended just to use regular water stones, which they store in a shelf beneath the Tormek.

She is indeed. Maria and Felipe Jr. are learning as Mariano Jr. in Calle Amnistia and I think they put a good effort in this.
Clearly both parents are preparing the path for their kids as other guitarmakers did in the past (Ramirez, Contreras, Bernabe, Manzanero, Caceres ecc. )
It’s not even particularly difficult as many parts are pre-worked and molds and tools are ready to use for a determined plan.
Maybe I’m a little heavy, I apologize in advance for this, but with my previous post I meant to clarify that Conde is a (commercially successful) company which works as companies do: in this case by planning and outsourcing some phases of the building and in the majority of the cases the assembly itself.
Anyway good luck to Maria Conde.
At the end of the day, what matters are the guitars, of course but some clarity doesn’t harm.

Condes are everywhere and they supply the huge demand in an industry that "romanticizes" the one builder/one guitar per month. Let's not forget the price they sell them for.

Sounds like a very successful business but at the same time I can understand why people see it as shady.

The question is real simple....in your opinion real or fake? Is she lying or does she and family actually build the guitars with their label inside? We always hear about the outsourcing but there is never any hard evidence

Slicing rosette tiles off a damp mosaic stick or sawing them off a dry one are just two different ways to achieve the same end. One method doesn’t invalidate the other.

The Condes have been producing guitars for four generations with two still active. Both Felipe Jr. and Maria sign, date and number their labels. Is it really that preposterous to allow that they may actually know what they’re doing and that Maria and her brother can and do build guitars?

(Ricardo, I suspect we’re probably in agreement on this.)

If you buy a brand new Conde do you get a signed label by one of the kids now?

According to their site, the top Filipe V model has woods that are actually hand picked by Filipe himself! I know! Why even advertise that? Isn’t that like step 1 of actually BUILDING the guitar? So for 10k, you get step one but that’s it.

On flamencoguitarsforsale.net there´s a Felipe Conde Crespo (Felipe Jr.) for sale for 6655 euros, a lot less than a top of the line Felipe Sr.

Guitarsalon sells also a couple of Felipe Jr. and in the past sold also a Maria Conde.
All the other Conde guitars around are supposedly made by Felipe Sr.

I feel like, after the split between the brothers, both sides are putting a great effort to show and market the idea that the guitars are made in their shop.

to their defense, I visited both shops couple of years ago and in both shops (Mariano/Felipe), the children were actually working on guitars. Now does that mean they started the material on hand from scratch or studying....that I can't tell. The new guitars I have played in both shops were mediocre (just my opinion).

I am a big fan of old condes (early 90s and below). Specially 70s negras.

I believe only the top of the range models of the big names can claim such 'integrity'. We all know that lesser models are commissioned to other guitar builders in town (or in Valencia) who, as mentioned earlier, just follow the plan and directions given by the luthier himself.

I once tried an estudio guitar in the Reyes workshop in Cordoba. It was early in the morning (in Spain, around 10 a.m [:)]) and I saw a smile of contentment on Manuel's face (RIP) as he was able to check by himself the sound qualities of an instrument that was selling for €2250 at the time (2007). It really sounded like (not as) a Reyes but was lacking the Master's genuine timbre and details. Great guitar for the money though.

Whoa, this was hard to watch.


Everything was easy, shaping the inside of the heel with a rasp (easy).

Gluing the box with the wrong kind of glue (I am happy that I will not need to repair one of those guitars in the future).

Using the wood chosen by her grandfather. (Not choosing the wood herself. Personally I find choosing the wood myself the most satisfying part of the process.)

No mention of varnish (the instruments shown in the video obviously spray varnished).

Being 4th generation,,, easy!!!

Most documentaries are scripted. Is it possible that they were just doing things for the camera to go along with the script to make this film? Maybe they figure most people don’t know a lot about guitar making and wouldn’t notice the details the educated people such as yourself would notice. Maybe they don’t really build things that way, but it was staged for the camera just so they can make a documentary.

My documentary wasn't scripted and, though there are some bits that were missed, it is as real as you are going to get and it is free.

True enough. In the last 15 years, a lot more docs. have been, quite simply, faked. It's easier to invent a 'dramatic' arc, but it is still a lie. I see them all the time.

The guitars from Atocha 53 that I tried in the workshop some two years ago gave me the impression to be more estudio than professional class. Not greatly finished either. That's why I finally bought a Romero: outstanding class and finish and one-man made from scratch.
