Hello All,

I have heard for years of the practice of wiping a rosewood joint with acetone just prior to applying the glue. The object of course is to clear away oily resin so that the glue sticks better.

I occasionally have a joint failure between Spanish cedar back linings and tentellones, and the insides of rosewood sides, using hide glue. I'm tempted to try the acetone treatment. Anybody have experience with it?

In adavance, I have not tried.
My suggestion is to keep warm the tendellones and to use a thicker hh glue for the purpose.
The reason behind the treatment of some rosewoods with acetone is more about to wipe away the superficial oils: some species of rosewoods like grenadillo (to quote a name) tend to have that superficial oil patina which would make otherwise impossible a good joint.

Art Overholtzer used to soak his rosewood to remove the resin. I just use solid lining and white glue for things I don't want to come apart.

Yes, Overholtzer kind of over-thought this (as he did other aspects of building). I've not found any need for this, especially with modern glues.
