Dear flamencos, i have always wanted a negra but could not warrent spending the huge money because i am not a professional. I have found a negra for 638.00 euro on the market brand new. I think this is very cheap for a negra, does anyone know much about this model or maker? It seems too good to be true, i havent played this guitar only seen it advertised, your help is much appreciated.
Thanks Amigos,
Pete

Do your homework. Buying a guitar without playing it can be a problem. What is the return/shipping policy?

Just one more link:

Try google and see what you can determine. Are you in Europe?

I picked up my 10fc on Ebay for 612Es incl case, transport. Excellent condition but not much of a flamenco guitar. It's now in Madrid being used for classical.

When I looked at prices (10fc) through retail outlets I found alhambras had an incredible range. 900Es in Italy up to 3000$ US for the same guitar. It is not difficult to find the 7 at a little over 600 so the price is not exceptional.

I guess if my 10 was set up OK it might be better but it is heavy (you could say tough as old boots) [:D] AS Tom says "try before you buy"

Skai -> RE: Alhambra 7fp (Feb. 9 2006 9:39:38)

Funny thing though, I tried a 10Fc and the flamenco tone was very distinct for it's price, definitely NOT a classical. The sound was too shallow and percussive for a classical, very suitable for dance accompaniment.

This just means that either Nigel or I have some problems with hearing! [:D] Or else the set-up is simply inconsistent. Where I am, the 10Fc costs SGD$2000 and it's well worth the money for the great sound. It didn't sound like a great solo flamenco guitar though, it's more percussive and shallow sounding.

As for the 7 series, note that 7Fc (the cypress version) is the entry level full solid blanca. The 7Fp is NOT a full solid guitar! The sides and back are of laminated rosewood. I haven't had the chance to try the negra though, but I've a feeling it'll be like a classical guitar with golpeadors. [&:] I'd think twice if I'm buying it before trying!

PS. Come to Singapore, Alhambras are available cheap and brand new! [;)]

Skai I expect your ear is better than mine but in this case it wasn't my ear. That said several people have commented on how variable they can be (guitars as well as ears [:D]) so as you say our friend must get his hands on the very one.

But that price for the 10fc is the cheapest I have seen. You might well get visitors

Thanks everyone for the advice its all been very helpful and i think unless i can play this guitar theres no way im buying it. If a shop has one on the shelf im prepared to travel a little way to try it, im looking into all the music shops nearby who stock alhambra. The laminated sides and back are my main concern at this point but you never know, if the action is set up right it could make the difference between a hunk of wood and playable guitar. If i get one of these guitars ill let you all know what they are like as a cheap negra, ill also let you all know if its crap, thanks again amigos

How the heck did you find the 10Fc for 612Es? I paid double that in Madrid from the Jose Ramizez shop. Now I have buyers remorse[:@] Her in the US you could pay $2000.

Are we talking about the same guitar. It has the red rosette right?

As far as saying it's heavy, what do you mean? The guitar is very light in weight and very bright, percussive in sound. Especially with their low setup. 2.7 mm at the 12th on E6! I actually plan on having another saddle made to raise the action a little to lessen the buzz a bit. Although, I'm starting to enjoy that sound. [8D]

Trev as I said these guitars have an incredible price range. I remember they sold for far higher prices in the US than in Europe. An outlet in Italy was the cheapest I found. We are talking about 2 years ago.

Mine was secondhand but close to new.

Don't get me wrong it seems (and it is possibly more a feel than reality - I haven't weighed it) heavy. To be fair that's a comparison with an Anders blanca and a Valeriano Bernal. The young lady in Madrid thinks it is a great guitar and enjoys it very much. And yes I was well pleased with the price. That said the price Skai quotes in Singapore is only a liittle over 1000 Es.

Yes it has a red rosette and for sure is an Alhambra 10fc.

I think Alhambras are a bit on the heavy side as well. Remember that the 10fc is a full cypress guitar and thus a lot lighter than a rosewood guitar

I stand corrected. Your right. I did an unscientific weight test with my 10F against some other blancas and your right it is a bit heavy. Before I only played a negra which is heavier. Compared to my Gibson ES335 any flamenco guitar is light to me. i never really considered it before.[8|]

Compared to the thick necked Gibson Les Paul I used to play, an ES 335 is light as a feather. I think everything is relative[;)]
