Is it safe to assume that Tomatito recorded Rosas del Amor with a Conde Hermanos blanca (perhaps the one pictured on the original album cover)? I know he started using a negra in the early 90s (encuentro, Camaron at Montreux 91). I guess I am just curious because that album has some of the best guitar tones I have heard.

I could not place that nasally sound he got on that album based on any guitars I saw him use on video, until I saw him using this Ramirez classical with a tap plate! [:D]. Pretty sure by the tone it’s this guitar he used....even for the overdubbed re mix parts.

And to compare:

Wow that does sound awfully close..but then I suspect a different sound for Soledad; sounds more crunchy. The guitar in the Bienal clip reminds me of the sound on Barrio Santiago though nasal and also hollow.

I think the entire album is same guitar. Here is Soledad on a conde negra:

Tomate's Conde negra period is my favourite. I always assumed he used that negra on Rosas del Amor but then I have never seen him use it before 91. That guitar suits him.

I wouldn’t say it’s a special period... different concerts w Camaron show him with various guitars from 1991. The negra was used in montreux 1991. After that I only see him use two negras, both similar look and sound only different rosettes. The one used in montreux same as encuentro here:

And this one, not sure which was used for that solea posted earlier:

Interesting thread...

I'd never thought of Tomatito playing a classical Ramirez with a tap plate. Until now I had always assumed the only one was Manolo Sanlúcar. Then this guitar from another 'Manolo" came up for sale a few weeks ago:

Who else played Ramirez classicals turned into flamenco?

Serranito and Juan Serrano
