1st question: is this an ass or are these balls?
2nd question: why?
[:D]

Love handles.

The stylized shape of a true Egyptian belly dancer, as opposed to the film fantasy.

Arash -> RE: strange shape guitar (Jan. 22 2018 23:39:38)

looks like a stolen and swollen version of the original design

That guitar makes me want to poke my eyes out. I can never "unseen" it.......

estebanana -> RE: strange shape guitar (Jan. 23 2018 0:30:58)

It looks like a woman's butt, where you guys seeing dicks in that? That is "side boob". Gee I have to point out sexist cliche' to flamenco dudes......... hahaha

jalalkun -> RE: strange shape guitar (Jan. 23 2018 7:39:19)

this kinda reminds me of when y'all were only talking about dildos and phalli. well there ya have it. ahahaha [:D]

Piwin -> RE: strange shape guitar (Jan. 23 2018 7:52:22)

Apparently, even guitars have one slightly larger than the other. The plot thickens.

RobJe -> RE: strange shape guitar (Jan. 23 2018 9:46:40)

Horrible!

Gerundino had a go at making a new shape in the 1980's. He was quite open about the fact that he had used a woman's body as the inspiration. It just goes to show what can happen to someone spending many lonely hours working with hand tools and breathing in wood dust and solvents.

I had the opportunity to play one of these a few years ago. It felt heavy and clumsy.

Gerundino’s “la guitarra de formato”. I think he made just for 4 of them (one was given to Paco Pena, the others gifted to his children) and one of them is actually for sale.
I never tried one of them but Paco Pena said it sounds exactly the same as a conventional Gerundina, which is quite odd.
The report of this story and of similar experiment (both failed) can be read in a small book written by Gerundino’s nephew.

RobJe -> RE: strange shape guitar (Jan. 23 2018 14:19:18)

This one sold for about £3000 including fees at an auction in London in 2015. There is one (possibly this one) for sale in Spain.

Here it is.

That's fancy sevillanas rasgueado.

Morante -> RE: strange shape guitar (Jan. 23 2018 15:22:32)

When I bought mine, he showed one of these experiments. Neither he nor I were not convinced that they sounded better, but he was adamant that they were not for sale. Time changes anything[;)]

This book is titled "Gerundino Fernández: biografía de un guitarrero", by Paco Urrutía and published by the Univeridad de Almería, 2007. I imagine that it would be hard to find. Paco is sobrino, but more correctly "sobrino carnal por línea materna".

Echi -> RE: strange shape guitar (Jan. 23 2018 17:21:46)

Hi,
I have the book and it’s nice and with some interesting infos and anecdotes. Nonetheless more about Gerundino himself than the guitars he made.
I got interested in Gerundino after I bought my first Gerundina, 20 years ago.
Fascinating sad story. I’m happy his son is said to be very good in guitarmaking.

pundi64 -> RE: strange shape guitar (Jan. 23 2018 18:52:37)

Yes I agree, looks like a mid-riff bulged woman, sitting with her back to us. Don't see the resemblance to a males sexual organ.
Guess it's all the eyes of the one gazing at the guitar, like one of those psychiatric ink splotches, it's all in the eyes of the beholder.

Leñador -> RE: strange shape guitar (Jan. 23 2018 23:45:05)

I'm not really seeing anything Freudian, they're just hideous. Like shaping a sports car like an elephant.

estebanana -> RE: strange shape guitar (Jan. 24 2018 1:14:23)

It looks like Gibson 335 who's mother took thalidomide when she was bearing. The treble side needs a cutaway.

This is in very bad taste. These children and their padres have suffered more than you imagine.

Joan Maher -> RE: strange shape guitar (Dec. 26 2018 8:33:35)

Wow, what a thing what was going through his mind?

I’ve always thought of it as the guitar with Mickey Mouse ears.

Here’s Paco playing it in August ’82:
